PAST CONTINUOUS

The Past Continuous is used to talk about an action that was IN PROGRESS in the
past. It went on for some time, but it is now finished.

It is often used in storytelling to set a scene or describe a situation.

1. In a galaxy far away, the Rebels were fighting against the Empire…
(CONTEXT)

3. I was studying while my father was making dinner.
(ACTION IN PROGRESS + ACTION IN PROGRESS)

4. I was training when the starship fell.


5. I was sleeping, when the phone rang.
(ACTION IN PROGRESS IN THE BACKGROUND + INTERRUPTION!)
