SIX RECOGNIZED SUCCESSFUL FILIPINO ENTREPRENEURS

a. What is the educational background of the entrepreneur?


•Henry Sy
- In 1950, Henry Sy graduated from Far Eastern University with an Associate of Arts in commercial
studies after finishing his secondary schooling at the now-named Chiang Kai Shek College in Tondo,
Manila.

•Tony Tab Caktiong (Jolllibee Foods)


- Mr. Caktiong graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1975.
Harvard University, AIM, the University of Michigan Business School, and Harvard Business School
havealso granted him credentials for management coaching.

•Socorro Ramos (National Book Store)


- She received a Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in
2006, which was a remarkable accomplishment for a woman who had only completed secondary school

•John Gokongwei Jr. (J.G. Holdings)


- In 1961, John went back to school to complete his MBA at De La Salle University while his company
began to introduce names like Blend 45 (an instant coffee brand to compete with Nestle’s Nescafe). He
participated in a 14-week advanced management program at Harvard a decade later.

•Edgar Sia (Mang Inasal)


- He completed his elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education in the province. He had originally
intended to study architecture but left the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City to concentrate more on
his business. He was adamant that his provincial upbringing and the practical experience he gained on the
job might be an asset.

•Joe Magsaysay (Potato Corner)


- Magsaysay earned his Master of Entrepreneurship degree from the Asian Institute of Management in 2001
and completed the Owner/President Management Program at the Harvard Business School in 2016.

b. Is the line of entrepreneurial activity congruent to the educational background or skill of the
entrepreneur? Why or why not?
- The educational backgrounds of these six entrepreneurs were not directly congruent with their business
ventures. However, their success came from a combination of their education, skills, adaptability, and
entrepreneurial drive. Entrepreneurship often requires a diverse skill set and the ability to learn and adapt
quickly to changing business environments.

c. What are the common traits of the entrepreneurs?


- These entrepreneurs share several common traits, including resilience in the face of challenges, a strong
work ethic, a keen sense of innovation, and the ability to adapt to changing market conditions.
Additionally, they possess a relentless drive for success and a customer-centric approach to business.

d. Are the necessary skills in their chosen business learned or acquired? Explain
- In the cases of these successful entrepreneurs, a combination of learned and acquired skills contributed to
their achievements. Many of them started with a strong foundation in business principles, which they
acquired through education and early work experiences. However, they also developed specific industry-
related skills over time through hands-on experience and continuous learning. For instance, they likely
honed their leadership, marketing, and financial management skills through practical application within
their respective businesses.

e. DO they employ others in their business? Expand your answer


- Yes, all of these entrepreneurs have employed others in their businesses. They recognized the importance
of building strong teams and delegating responsibilities to experts in various areas to help grow their
companies. By assembling skilled and dedicated employees, they were able to scale their businesses and
achieve long-term success.
