Lesson 6: Homework Answer Key

Below is the section we suggested you analyze in the lesson… along with the correct answer for
you…

"So I hope this is making the point really clear and helpful to people (Assertive) that there's so
much to hear (Assertive) as we learn this (Directive) and that's where we need to focus.
(Directive) When we get clarity about what we're really hearing and which to take into account.
(Commissive) First and second and third, which we'll elaborate, not here, but we will elaborate
this more and more (Commissive) because there's lots of patterns here. (Assertive)

We can hear for one kind of thing (Assertive) and we can then aim our language at what it takes
to change it. (Directive) So there's a lot (Assertive) that we're going to be breaking down
(Commissive), but you'll kind of get lost later (Commissive) if you haven't first figured out how
to hear (Directive). I guess another way to say that (Assertive) would be the benefits just keep
piling one upon the other (Declaritive) as you learn to hear this really clearly (Directive) because
there's at least these four levels to hear within (Assertive). So it's a lot of levels to hear.
(Assertive) So let's get great at hearing. (Directive)

And I think let's give a homework assignment, Joseph, (Directive) that will really help people
(Commissive) and I say grab a pen and paper or what have you, turn on one of these humor
news shows and at least make a list of as many of the things as you're hearing, as many of the
speech acts as you hear. (Directive) Maybe make note of the context that's coming in.
(Directive) If they show a video clip and you can see this on youtube as an example
(Commissive), then stop it. (Directive) Watch that clip of whatever the news portion is
(Directive). What are they doing? (Directive) What are the speech acts there? (Directive) What
did the comedian respond to? (Directive) Which of those is he responding to? (Directive) How is
the person trying to shape the conversation as a result? (Directive) What's he spinning?
(Directive) And I think hearing like this will start to get this into our heads a little more.
(Commissive) Is there anything else we could add to that or to make it clear? (Directive)"
