LECTURE (1): LEVEL A1

Teacher’s Notes

AIM: To introduce oneself to others. To give personal details. To ask and answer Wh
Questions

1. Attendance and introduction (10 mintues)

2. Before class photocopy the instructions for students (above) for all students and hand
them out in class. The first day of class is about introductions and Ice-Breaking activities
i.e., getting to know each other activities in a friendly and relaxed classroom
environment.

3. Firstly, introduce yourself by writing your name on the board and giving a brief
introduction about yourself. (3-4 minutes)

4. Explain briefly to the class what the IELTS-A1 Course is about. Read out the following
details of CEFR, LEVEL A1 below to explain to students what this level means in terms of
language proficiency. This will give them an idea of what the course objectives are. You
may also show this on the Multimedia Projector. (5 minutes)

CEFR LEVEL A1

Level A1 is the lowest level of generative language use – the point at which
the learner can interact in a simple way, ask and answer simple questions
about themselves, where they live, people they know, and things they have,
initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on
very familiar topics, rather than relying purely on a very finite rehearsed,
lexically-organised repertoire of situation-specific phrases.

Global
Students at this level can understand and use familiar everyday expressions
and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
They can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions
about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things
they have. They can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks
slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. (Source-www. stgiles-

LECTURE (1): LEVEL A1

5. For Exercise 1, tell the class that they are going to introduce themselves to one
another, and give their basic personal details. They will do this by taking turns
interviewing each other and filling up the Identity Card. Divide the class into pairs and
ask students to read the instructions of Exercise 1 before they begin and clarify any
questions they may have. Teach them the basic structures for introducing oneself by
writing them on the board (given n Exercise 1-leave them on the board). Students
should ask and answer questions in complete sentences. (10 minutes)

6. Give students time to complete the activity. Remember they must take turns to
interview one another and then draw their partner’s picture on the Identity Card. (15
minutes)

7. Now select pairs to introduce their friend to the rest of the class. This should be done by
asking pairs to come up to the front of the class and take turns in introducing partners
and showing their picture on the Identity Card. (30 minutes)

8. Now ask students to exchange their Identity Cards so that they have their own profile
in hand. Then, tell them that this is their Identity Card for the rest of the course
duration. You will find that they find this very amusing and at the same time, they have
learnt how to introduce themselves to each other as well as to the rest of the class. (1
minute)

9. If there is time left over, review the phrases used when introducing oneself by writing
them on the board (below the phrases already written) e.g., My name is…, I come from
… (District), I live in …(City), I have …(number of siblings – two sisters and one brother).
For homework ask students to write a short paragraph about themselves using these
structures and the information from the Identity Card. They may start this in class if
time is remaining. (15 minutes)
