Obligation to wear safety goggles on construction sites

1 Introduction of obligation to wear safety goggles on construction sites

Due to the increasing number of eye injuries at construction sites caused by flying foreign objects
such as sand, dust or other particles and also due to more stringent safety requirements in the
wind energy sector, an obligation to wear safety goggles on construction sites is being introduced.
This applies to the entire construction site from the moment persons enter the site until they leave
the site.

1.1 Time of introduction

The safety goggle concept is currently being revised in order to meet the requirements of the obli-
gation to wear eye protection at all times (e.g. safety goggles with anti-fog coating on both sides of
the lenses - inside and out)
Testing has already begun so that the new safety goggles for construction sites can be introduced
by summer 2016.
Starting September 2016, the obligation to wear safety goggles will also be introduced at the inter-
national level.

1.2 Basic sign for construction site

The construction site signs have already been revised to include the pictogram “Wear eye protec-
tion” (SAP 47260 sign “Danger of death” sign; complete ass. DE/EN is being replaced by the

SAP 160750 sign “Basic “Construction site” DE/EN).
The installation containers will be successively equipped with the new signs.
Until the official introduction of mandatory safety goggles in September 2016, the team leaders
may, as an exception, paste the “Wear eye protection” pictogram on the construction site sign. This
exception expires once the new signs have been introduced.
