CHAPTER I

THE OVERVIEW

It is stated in the Meriam Webster dessert is a “usually sweet course or dish (as of pastry
or ice cream) usually served at the end of a meal”. Studies have shown that consuming any type
of dessert “Eating sweet food improves mood because it can alleviate a dysphoric mood as it
provides more energy and can lead to an increase in the levels of serotonin in the brain, which
can therefore reduce depression. Evidence that supports this is seen with Gibson, who found that
people increased the fat and carbohydrate content of their meals when stressed or depression.
This supports the idea that people eat sweet food to improve their mood as it shows that in order
to feel less stressed and depressed, to feel better with the increase in serotonin, which is a
calming and mood elevating neurotransmitter.” (Alex B., N.D)

Desserts are something that people would keep on looking and keep on coming back for
that sweet taste satisfaction. That is why me and my groupmates came up with an idea to make
desserts as our main product for our planned business. The vision that we have in our mind is to
bring warmth and comfort through our products, we hoped that through this we could help boost
someone’s mood by consuming our product.

The BETAmis will be moderately priced at a student budget price offering specially
made desserts by grade 11 students from STEM BETA. Coffee Jelly, Munchkins, Doughnuts,
Filipino Style Shanghai, Nachos and Graham float are all on our proposed menu. With the
aforementioned desserts, we will not limit our capabilities to only make desserts for the whole
time that we will be selling our products, we have also thought of selling sliced apple mangoes
with a sauce that is made from bagoong, because we have observed that there are a number of
students who are fond of eating sliced apple mangoes dipped with this specially made bagoong
sauce that is mixed with soy sauce, sugar and chilies.

They say that “a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” with this motto we want to
fill our consumer’s stomach with something sweet and this is not just for the sole reason to gain
profit but to also help our customers to elevate their mood.
