Important Terms

1. Resource- Anything which satisfies human needs is a resource .ex water, textbook,
air, land, vegetable etc.features of a resource.
2. Patent- It means the exclusive right over any idea or invention.
3. Technology- It is the application of latest knowledge and skill in doing or making
things.
4. Stock of resource- It is the amount of resource available for use.
5. Natural resource- Resources that are drawn from Nature and used without much
modification are called natural resources. Ex the air we breathe, the water in our rivers
and lakes, the soils, minerals are all natural resources.
6. Human made resource -People use natural resources to make building bridges,
roads, machinery and vehicles, which are known as human made resources
Technology is also a human made resource.
7. Human Resource- It refers to the number and abilities of the people. It is the skills of
the human that help in transferring the physical material into a valuable resource
8. Sustainable Development-
Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future is called
sustainable development.

Key Points of the chapter

A. Features of a resource
 Utility or usability is what makes an object or substance a resource.
 Value -All resources have a value. Value means worth.
 Some resource has economic value, some do not.
 For example, metals may have an economic value, a beautiful landscape may not.
B. Important factors that change substances into a resource
 Time and technology are two important factors that can change substances into
resources.
 Both are related to the needs of the people.
 Utility or usability and value also makes a substance a resource.
 People themselves are the most important resource.
 It is their ideas, knowledge, inventions and discoveries that lead to the creation of
more resource.
C. What are various causes of degradation of resources?
1. Excessive use of resources
2. Misuse and wastage of resources.
3. Unequal distribution of resources.
4. Increasing needs of growing population .

D. Human Resource

It refers to the number and abilities of the people. It is the skills of the human that help in
transferring the physical material into a valuable resource.

E. Importance of Human Resource

 People are human resources and human resources are important because people can
make the best uses of nature to create more resources by applying knowledge, skill
and technology.
F. Resource Conservation

Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called resource
conservation.

G. Measures to conserve resources-

a. By reducing consumption.
b. Recycling the resources.
c. Reusing and Recover the resources.
d. Careful utilization of resources.
e. Economical extraction of ores . (without wasting them. )
H. Sustainable Development
 Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future is called
sustainable development.
 In other words, carefully utilizing resources so that besides meeting the present
requirements it also takes care of the need of future generations is what is known as
sustainable development.
Questions from MLP-Learn for Exams

Q1. -Explain Principles of Sustainable Development. Why is it necessary for the

people on the earth?OR
Q1. The future of our planet depends the way we use natural resources today. Justify
the statement to explain principles of Sustainable development.

{Learn Explanation In Detail}

Six principles of sustainable development are:
1. Respect and care for all forms of life.
We should take care of plants, animals and all forms of life on earth.
2. Improve the quality of human life – in such a way that we do not disturb the
nature, use less of fossils fuels. .

3. Conserve the earth’s vitality and diversity—We should protect all types of life and
their species to maintain ecological balance. .
4. Minimize the depletion of natural resources--- Natural resources must be used
carefully, we should not waste at any stage like extraction, processing or
manufacturing.
5. Change personal attitude and practices towards environment--- every human
being should try to take care of the natural environment and surroundings.
6. Enable communities to care for their environment---- We should make other’s
aware about the importance of environment .We should follow some positive
steps like grow more trees and tell others about the benefits of growing trees .
Donot throw garbage in your surroundings.

Q2. Why do we need to develop resources?(SOC)

Ans- We need to develop resources to fulfill our needs. Utility or usability of a substance
makes it into a valuable resource. Use of resources also influence creation of new
technology and their development.

Q3. How does a gift of nature become a resource?(Q -BANK)

Ans-Many resources are free gifts of nature that can be used directly without much
modifications like water, air, soil. Utility, value, time and technology are some factors through
which humans can make these gifts of nature into resource. Eg Water into hydroelectricity,
Wind into wind energy, Sun heat into solar power.

Q4. How does technology help in development of resources?(SOC)

Ans-The technology has a played a vital role in making resources more valuable. The term
technology includes the scientific knowledge and skill of the people. Every resource has
some utility for man but its utilization depends upon availability of appropriate technology.
Hence the scientific knowledge and technical skills are needed for the transformation of
resources into valuable goods. The developing countries lack capital (money) and
technologywhere as developed countries have capital and technology to explore natural
resources.

Q5. Careless use of renewable resources can affect their stock’. Justify the
statement. (SOC)

Renewable resources are : water, air, forest, soil and land.

1. Water—Water is an unlimited natural resource. But if we throw garbage and
contaminate the water by chemical waste and sewage waste , the quality of water gets
affected.
2. Air—Industries and vehicles pollute the environment by adding carbon mono oxide.
Deforestation also increases the amount of carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere, it can
lead to global warming.
3. Forest—Careless use of paper ,wood and furniture will lead to deforestation. We
should not cut trees at a fast rate , rather grow more plants and maintain the balance
of ecosystem .
4. Soil—Soil is a natural resource. We should not throw garbage , industrial waste and
plastic waste on the surface of the earth. Farmers should not use synthetic fertilizers in
excess. Overgrazing also leads to soil erosion.
5. Land -- Land is among the most important natural resource. All our needs are fulfilled
from land. Places differ from each other due to the types of land resource.

resources which have ............. value.
(a) Ethical Value
(b) Artistic Value
(c) Aesthetic Value
(d) Economic Value
Ans.(c) Aesthetic Value
Q2.Natural resource are classified into various types on the basis of: (select the
incorrect one)
(a) Distribution
(b) Development
(c) Origin
(d) Destruction
Ans.(d) Destruction
Q3. The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was
established by the UN General Assembly in December-------.
(a) 1992
(b) 1993
(c) 1994
(d) 1995
Ans: A 1992

The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was established by the
UN General Assembly in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit.
From its inception, the CSD was highly participatory in structure and outlook, by engaging in
its formal proceedings a wide range of official stakeholders and partners through innovative
formulae.
