Concept Notes:

Music of West Asia is modal. Harmony is not emphasized. West Asian music is commonly
used during:
➢ Communal worship in mosque, synagogue, and church
➢ Mystic rituals
➢ Life passage events like Weddings, Anniversaries, etc.
➢ Entertainment like Belly dancing and Folk dancing
Israeli singers have distinctive vocal style. They sing with guttural and throaty enunciation.
Israel’s music (Jewish music) is divided into:

➢ Devotional- vocal, featured during Sabbath and other holy days


➢ Secular- instruments and voice are used, played during life passage events
Hora- folk dance of Romania and Israel, performed in a linked circle. The dance steps are
simple: the dancers face the center, take one step forward, one back, three to the left, and five
to the right, so that the circle moves counterclockwise.
