Structure of the seminar

This seminar takes place in digital form only.
You learn and study at home.
Please post your questions in the forum on OPAL. We have created topic areas for you.
The tutors of the seminar will be present in the forum at the usual time when the seminar
takes place to answer questions (a so-called chat consultation hour) – Wednesdays from
13:45 to 15:15.
You get the tasks done at the times that suit you. Recommendation: Complete all tasks
every week as the timeline of the seminar is strictly planned.
It is important to upload the solution(s) of the task(s) punctually! You will find the
submission dates of each session in your learning journal.
You will work with one document, the learning journal. The procedures and tasks of all
sessions are written down in detail in the learning journal and are comprehensible.

Seminar: Innovation & Value Creation

Excursus: The Learning Journal as a Tool for Learning

What is a Learning Journal?

- Tool to support the learning process and behavior of students
- Continuous documentation of the learning behavior and the solution of all provided tasks of each
student during the seminar
- Contributes to deepening and improving the understanding of the content of the seminar and
should thus facilitate the topic identification and writing of the final paper by
- intensive engagement and discussion of the topic to discover and correct logical errors and contradictions
in the concept or learning
- Creation of new associations and ideas
- Main aim: Developing awareness of one's own learning process and using strategies to support
one's own learning process

Learning Formats in the Seminar 3/3

Format Description
Web Based Trainings − Used for knowledge transfer
(WBT) − Thematic use in the fields of scientific writing and in the field of innovation &
value creation

Excursus: Learn more about Innovation & Value Creation and Scientific
Writing with the use of Web based Trainings!
▪ What does web based trainings (WBTs) mean?
▪ “Web-based training (WBT) is an internet browser-based learning which is also available on local intranet.
WBT technologies include streaming audio/video, webinars, forums and instant messaging.”
▪ “WBT is applied by organizations varying in industry and genre, including the military, elementary/secondary
schools, colleges, universities and law enforcement. However, this should not be confused with E-Learning
2.0.”

Seminar: Innovation & Value Creation

Excursus: Scientific Writing

Understanding the term
▪ What does scientific writing mean?
▪ “Scientific writing is a technical form of writing that is designed to communicate scientific information to other
scientists. Depending on the specific scientific genre a journal article, a scientific poster, or a research proposal, for
example some aspects of the writing may change, such as its purpose, audience, or organization. Many aspects of
scientific writing, however, vary little across these writing genres.”

▪ What are some important hallmarks of professional scientific writing?

▪ “Its primary audience is other scientists. Because of its intended audience, student-oriented or general-audience details,
definitions, and explanations which are often necessary in lab manuals or reports are not terribly useful. Explaining
general-knowledge concepts or how routine procedures were performed actually tends to obstruct clarity, make the
writing wordy, and detract from its professional tone.”
▪ “It is concise and precise. A goal of scientific writing is to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely.
Flowery, ambiguous, wordy, and redundant language run counter to the purpose of the writing.”
▪ “It must be set within the context of other published work. Because science builds on and corrects itself over time,
scientific writing must be situated in and reference the findings of previous work.”
