Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

Making Money on TikTok

I TikTok is a short-form, video-sharing application that allows users to create and share 15-second
videos, on any topic. This popular platform allows its users to create a variety of videos ranging
from challenges, dance strikethrough, magic tricks, and funny videos. With nearly 100 million
monthly active users and two billion downloads globally, it is an understatement to say that TikTok
has experienced a meteoric rise since its global release in 2018. As more attention is focused on 5
the platform, we begin to wonder, “can content creators make money on TikTok?” While TikTok is
not built specifically around monetization (the process of earning income from online content), the
application is very commercial-friendly, and it is possible to earn a living by creatively using the
platform.

II Through TikTok, creators can secure sponsorship and brand deals for their posts, especially if they 10
have a large number of followers. Monetizing a TikTok was not always the norm. In the early days
of TikTok, there were few branded posts. TikTok does not have any space for traditional display
advertisements and is not even in competition with other social media platforms, in terms of it being
a marketing channel. However, due to its fast growth and rising popularity, many brands are now
realising the potential of TikTok as a marketing channel. Several brands have utilised techniques 15
like TikTok challenges and contests to get users to generate brand-related content.

III Brands have also smartly utilised hashtags, in a more or less similar fashion as on other social
media platforms, to promote their TikTok marketing campaigns. As an increasing number of brands
has entered the space, selling opportunities for sponsored content on the social platform are
becoming easily available for creators. The amount of money one can earn on TikTok varies, but 20
just like any social media platform, if the content goes viral, it could be lucrative. A London-based
economist, Tom Hartmann who wrote an article in Medium - an open socialising platform, has made
a clear example to estimate the income made by prominent TikTok creators. He estimated that
TikTok creators with 100,000 followers earn about $500 to $2,000 for sponsored videos. Doing the
math, that could mean that top TikTok creators make somewhere between $50,000 and $150,000 25
for sponsored posts. While more brands are flocking to the application, it brings with them
opportunities for the creators to earn a lot of money.

IV Henceforth, monetizing the TikTok is one of the newest ways to make money online. The ways to
gain profit from this social platform may vary and it is up to the creators to make their choice.
Creators who want to make money out of their audiences directly, without relying on a brand’s 30
advertising dollars, can turn to selling merchandise and products to their audience. TikTok’s
partnership with Teespring - a company that operates a platform - allows people to commercialise
their custom-made items. This means creators can sell merchandise directly in the application. The
integration allows TikTok creators to customise a design from 180 different products. To test the
integration, TikTok and Teespring launched with an initial cohort of 7,000 creators in September 35
2020. They are expected to announce how additional creators can start utilising the integration. All
the creators need to do is to be creative in presenting and promoting these goods and utilising
TikTok to make money.

V Apart from dependency on brands sponsorships and promoting own merchandise, creators can
also use their videos to help brands or businesses launch and promote products. As TikTok’s 40
popularity continues to establish itself, several brands are taking this opportunity to advertise their
products, thus providing prospect for creators to make money. This approach is also known as
influencer marketing. One of the early examples of influencer marketing on TikTok was Mucinex,
the cold and flu medicine. Mucinex worked with creators to promote its products during the cold
and flu season. The brand launched a challenge called #BeatTheZombieFunk and TikTok 45
influencers, such as the brother-sister duo OurFire were invited to participate. Creators who want
to get started with brand sponsorships and do not have representation can reach out to brands and
businesses themselves or find opportunities through TikTok’s official Creator Marketplace. It is a
cooperation in business that both TikTok creators and brands gain profits from each other.

VI It is undeniable that TikTok has taken over the social media world! Initially, the idea behind TikTok 50
was for people to quickly and easily create short videos using their smartphones, enabling everyone
to be a media creator. Overtime, users started seeing TikTok as a goldmine. This platform might
be best for creative people who want to earn money on social media without investing the time and
high production value that platforms like YouTube and Instagram typically require. That said, to
succeed on TikTok, creators need a solid understanding of the platform’s nuances and its culture, 55
which can also be a major time investment.
