AMPLITUDE MODULATION EXERCISES CEIT-29-402A MTh 3:00 - 4:30

1. A 1800-Hz signal which has an amplitude of 30-V amplitude modulates a 50-MHz carrier
which when modulated has an amplitude of 65 V. Determine the modulation index, percent
modulation, the upper and lower sideband frequencies, bandwidth of the wave, and write
the AM equation.

2. An audio signal described as

16 sin 2π (1000)t

amplitude modulates a carrier which is described as

20 sin 2π (20,000)t

Determine the modulation factor, percent modulation and the upper and lower sideband
frequencies and write the AM equation.

3. Given the AM wave equation:

eAM = 50 sin (3 X 106)πt + 7.5 cos 2,997,000πt – 7.5 cos 3,003,000πt,

calculate the modulation index, percent modulation, amplitude of the modulating signal
and the frequency of the carrier and modulating signal.

4. The total power content of an AM signal is 1000 W. Determine the power being transmitted
at the carrier frequency and at each of the sidebands when the percent modulation is
100%.

5. An amplitude modulated wave has a power of 800W at its carrier frequency. Determine
the power content of each of the sidebands and the total radiated power for a 90%
modulation.

6. Determine the percent modulation wave which has power content at the carrier of 450 KW
and 75 W in each of the sidebands when the carrier is modulated by a simple audio tone.

7. Determine the %modulation of an AM signal if the maximum voltage is 60 V and the

minimum voltage is 20V.

8. The total power radiated by an AM wave modulated 60% by a single wave is 15 KW. The
radiated power increases to 19.065KW when another wave simultaneously modulated the
carrier. What is the percent modulation of the second wave?
FREQUENCY MODULATION

Exercises:

1. A 93.2 MHz carrier is frequency modulated by a 5-KHz sine wave. The resultant FM signal
has a frequency deviation of 40 KHz. (a) Find the carrier swing of the FM signal. (b) Determine
the highest and lowest frequencies attained by the modulated signal. (c) What is the modulation
index of the FM wave (d) Calculate the percent modulation? (e) Determine the bandwidth using
Carson’s Rule.

2. Calculate the frequency deviation and the carrier swing of a frequency-modulated wave
which was produced by modulating a 50.4 MHz carrier. The highest frequency reached by the
FM wave is 50.415 MHz. Then calculate the lowest frequency reached by the FM wave. If the
frequency of the modulating signal is 5 KHz, what is the bandwidth of the FM wave (use the
table of Bessel functions)?
