CRUSHING AND GRINDING

PIC : Shiva Rinelly

Description

Crushing and Grinding is a competition that tests the participants’ skill and knowledge
about crushing and grinding process in laboratory scale by written and practical test. There
are four stages in this match, starting from primary crushing by jaw crusher, secondary
crushing by roll crusher, grinding using ball mill, and screening using vibrating screen.

written test in the main laboratory.
3. All activities begin after the "START" signal has been given by the committee.
4. The match stages are as follows:
a. Participants work on the written test and the practical test at the same time.
b. Participants will be given the materials (2.5 kg of limestone) and the
problem sheet for the written test.
c. The first stage of the competition is the Primary Crushing. At this stage,
participants perform primary crushing using a jaw crusher. Participants will
be given 2.5 kg of limestone and then put the materials into the jaw crusher.

4
Participants operate jaw crusher by themselves. The result of this process
will be used in the next stage.
d. The second stage is the Secondary Crushing. In this stage, the result of
previous stages is crushed again using a roll crusher. Participants set the
width of the gape of roll crusher manually. Participants will operate the roll
crusher by themselves.
e. The third stage is the Grinding process. At this stage, the material obtained
from the previous stages will be grinded using the ball mill. There are 2 sets
of ball mill provided by the committee. Before operating the ball mill, put
crushed materials and grinding balls into the ball mill cylinder which has
been provided. After that, close the cylinder with rubber lid and cylinder
lock. Put the cylinder into the correct position on the spinning table. Operate
the ball mill. After performing grinding process, place the ball mill
components back to the initial condition. The materials that will be sieved is
2 kg from the initial boulder. Participants are allowed to select at most 2 kg
sample from previous steps. Samples that weigh more than 2 kg will be
given penalty charge. The process will be observed by the judge.
f. The final stage is Screening. The weight of materials which will be sieved
using vibrating screen is 2 kg at most. Participants will prepare the screen
stacks based on the screen size, then put the materials to the top of screen
stacks. The screen stacks must be strengthened and the participants must
make sure that the screen bolts are tight. The committee will remind the
participants if the bolts are not tight enough. Vibrating screen must be
operated for 10-15 minutes. Then, put the screening result from each stack
into separated sample plastic bags.
g. The participants will measure the weight of those results, then they have to
make PSD graph to determine P80, F80, and RR80 value.
h. The participants also determine Limiting Reduction Ratio (LRR), Apparent
Reduction Ratio (ARR) and Working Reduction Ratio (WRR) value for
each step of comminution if the data are sufficient.
i. After finishing all of the process, the participants submit the results to the
committee.

5
5. When the committee give the "FINISH" signal, all participants must stop all
activities including the writing test.
