BLDG5554 Planning and Design Fundamentals

Premise:
In module 1 & 2, students learned the meaning of urban planning, urban design and
architecture, and the evolution of the city-making and urban design profession through history
and the main acts and plans on the provincial, regional and municipal levels that shape and
control the urban development in the city.
In small teams, students will research a place such as a square, plaza, park, amenity area, food
district, etc. and provide a rationale on what define this place and make it distinguished. A step-
by-step guide has been created to help you in starting your Assignment 1, which you can find on
the next page of this document. This assignment will be part of your final term project.
Assignment 1 (20%)

Requirements: Include the following:


1. Visual analysis using maps, drawings, sketches, photos, and videos to visualize and
illustrate the main elements of the place.
2. The rationale that identifies this place and your own experience when you visit the place.
3. Do not forget to:
a. Cite all resources,
b. Label all maps, drawings, images, and sketches,
c. Be precise in your description and avoid wordy sentences and imprecise statements
i.e., ‘many’, ‘a lot of’
Format: The presentation will be submitted in PDF file
Page size: Widescreen 16:9 in landscape direction
Length of the presentation: 10 minutes for each presentation
Submission Deadline: The project deadline can be found on SLATE in Assessments >
Assignments > Assignment 1. Late submissions: as per the Sheridan College Urban Design
Late Submission Policy.
Starting your Assignment 1
Step 1: Create a team of up to 6 students per team.
Step 2: Every team will select one of the great places you lived/visited and experienced
before.
Step 3: Every team will send an email to register the group and the place with your teacher
before September 14, 2023.
Step 4: Research your place and make your analysis based on the great place diagram
elements shown in page 1.
Step 5: Each team will put together an attractive presentation to teach the rest of the class
about the place.
Step 5: On the day of the presentation:

• Arrive with all the content your team needs to present,


• Each student on each team must present the part of the work she/he was
involved,
• Engage the rest of the class during the presentation.
Step 6: After the presentation, submit your presentation and any relevant documents for
grading as one flattened PDF on SLATE > Assessments > Assignments >
