ME 352 – Heat Transfer – Homework #3

As shown in the figure below, air at 25 oC (P = 1 atm) is flowing across a 2.5 m long
perfectly smooth copper pipe with a velocity of 32 m/s. The inner and outer diameter of the pipe
are 20 mm and 25 mm, respectively. Engine oil also enters the pipe with an average velocity of 5
m/s at 135 oC. Find all necessary fluid properties from tables and list all the references you used.
(Book, website, journal papers, etc.) Iterate your readings if necessary. Assume the inner and
outer surface of the pipe has a uniform temperature thorough the pipe length.

a) Determine the convection heat transfer coefficient of Air? (25 Points)

b) Determine the convection heat transfer coefficient of Engine Oil? (25 Points)

c) Calculate the exit temperature of oil? (10 Points)

d) Calculate the heat transfer rate from oil to air? (5 Points)

e) Calculate the inner and outer surface temperatures of the pipe based on the mean fluid
temperatures? (10 Points)

f) Calculate the pumping power required to overcome the pressure losses and to maintain the
flow of the oil in the pipe. (5 Points)

g) Record a maximum 3-minute video describing your solution. (Your camera must be on during
the presentation) (20 Points)
