Types of Suture and sample photo

According to Source: According to Structure:

1. Natural 1. Monofilament
2. Synthetic 2. Multifilament
3. Metallic
According to Coating: According to Fate:
1. Coated 1. Absorbable (undergo degradation and
2. Uncoated lose T.S. < 60 days)
2. Non Absorbable (maintain T.S > 60 days

NATURAL SUTURE:
Biological Origin:
Cause intense inflammatory reaction.
Examples:
“Catgut” purified collagen fibers derived from intestine of
healthy sheep or cows
Silk (non absorbable)

SYNTHETIC SUTURE:
Synthetic Polymers:
Do not cause intense inflammatory reaction
Examples:
Vicryl (absorbable)
Monocryl
Prolene
Nylon
ABSORBABLE SUTURE MATERIALS:
Are broken down by the patient’s body.
The original absorbable material was chromic catgut (still used today).
This is made from animal intestines and breaks down after 7 days.
Because it breaks down, there is less of a likelihood of an immune reaction.

1. CATGUT
Absorption in tissues can be delayed by
treating with chromic acid.
Catgut therefore available as plain and
chromic catgut.
Depending on preservative used catgut is
available either as boilable or non bilable
catgut:
1. Bilale catgut is preserved in xylol, toulene-
99.75%, phenyl merecuric acetate .025%.
2. Non bilable catgut is supplied in tubes
containing 90 - 95% alcohol.
Use(s):
It is used for all surgical procedures including
general closure, ophthalmic, orthopedics,
obstetrics/gynecology and gastrointestinal
surgery

2. KANGAROO TENDON 3. FASCIA LATA

Kangaroo tendon suture is obtained

from the tendon of tail of kangaroo and
is used for suturing joint capsule,
Fasica lata is used in the surgery of facial
hernial rings and places where more
tissues in case of paralysis or ptosis

fascial layers.
NON-ABSORBABLE SUTURE MATERIALS:
Not degraded, permanent maybe organic; inorganic or synthetic in nature and are
used as both the internal and external suture materials.
