TOPIC Linear VS Nonlinear Text

Sense the difference between linear and non-linear texts
Objectives
LEARNING Code: * Identify features of linear and non-linear texts;
COMPETENCY EN9RC-IIf-11.1 * Draw out information found in non-linear texts; and
* Discuss the relevance of information presented in the
illustrations, diagrams, maps, graphic organizers, etc.

UNDERSTAND
Linear VS Nonlinear Text

What is Linear text?

Linear text refers to traditional text that needs to be read from beginning to the end. Here,
the reader makes sense of the text according to the grammatical and syntactic arrangement of the words.
Moreover, this type of text has an order or sequence; it’s typically the author of the text who decides
the order of the text, or its reading path.

A linear text is the most common type of reading among learners. It focuses on the arrangement of the
words grammatically and artistically.

A good example of a linear text includes stories, speeches, letters, newspapers, reports and etc. The
reader in a linear text reads the piece sequentially from beginning to the end.
What is Nonlinear text?
Nonlinear text is the opposite of linear text. As its name suggests, it is nonlinear and non-
sequential. In other words, the readers do not have to go through the text in a sequential manner in order
to make sense of the text.
Examples of nonlinear text:
• Flow Chart

A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents

a workflow or process. A flowchart can also be
defined as a diagrammatic representation of an
algorithm, a step-by-step approach to solving a
task. The flowchart shows the steps as boxes of
various kinds, and their order by connecting the
boxes with arrows. This diagrammatic
representation illustrates a solution model to a
given problem. Flowcharts are used in analyzing,
designing, documenting or managing a process
or program in various fields.

REMEMBER
Key Points

• The difference between linear and nonlinear texts mainly depends on their reading paths.
Since linear texts have a sequential order, they have only one reading path. However, nonlinear
texts have multiple reading paths since they are non-sequential.

• To understand the difference between linear and nonlinear text clearly, look at some of the
examples of both reading paths. Some examples of linear texts include novels, poems, letters,
textbooks, etc. In contrast, flow charts, knowledge maps, digital texts with hyperlinks, and
encyclopedias are some examples of nonlinear text. Furthermore, non-linear allows readers to
you to find specific information more quickly and efficiently.

The Seven Ages of Man

William Shakespeare

All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players,
They have their exits and entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At
first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then, the whining schoolboy with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress'
eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden, and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice
In fair round belly, with good capon lin'd,
With eye
s severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose, and pouch on side,
His youthful hose well sav'd, a world too wide,
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again towards childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

TOPIC INTERPRETING INFORMATION FROM NON-LINEAR TEXTS

Interpret information found in non-linear texts such as
diagrams, maps, and charts.
Code:
LEARNING Objectives:
EN9RC-llg-5:
COMPETENCY * Identify the different kinds and functions of diagrams,
maps, and charts; and
* Explain the importance of the non-linear text.

UNDERSTAND
Interpreting information from Non-Linear Texts
Linear text
• This is the most common type of text that needs to be read from beginning to end.
• It focuses on the arrangement of the words, both grammatically and stylistically.
• Generally, texts printed on paper are considered as linear texts. Novels, poems, short stories, letters,
educational texts, and all those texts we read from the beginning to the end.
Non-linear text
• Its contexts are organized in a network structure. Readers could start from any part that they care about.
A guide or encyclopedia would be a perfect example, as readers are supposed to solve specific problems.
It doesn't make sense for them to read through.
• The readers do not have to go through the text sequentially to make sense of the text.
• Most people consider texts with visuals or graphs along with it as examples for nonlinear texts.

Example of Non-Linear Texts

1. CONCEPT MAP
A diagram shows the suggested relationships between concepts. "Typically represents ideas and information as
boxes and circle and uses lines to show the relationship between them." When you draw a concept map, you're
creating a visual image of that subject you can use to analyze and check your understanding of a subject. Concept
maps are superior in that sense because not only they improve the processing of facts, but they also understand
facts.

Interpretation: This example illustrates

the Causes and Effects of an event, such
as The Civil War.

2. LINE GRAPH - A common type of chart which displays

the information as a series of data points connected by line
segments to show trends. A line graph is a graphical display
of information that changes continuously over time.

Example: To monitor the health of her potato plants, Ms.

Dela Cruz recorded the number of potatoes that grow in her
garden each year. In which year on the graph did the largest
number of potatoes grow in Ms. Dela Cruz's garden?

Interpretation: It is found from the graph above that the

largest number of potatoes grew in the year 2011.

3. BAR GRAPH - A chart that presents data with rectangular bars

differs in their sizes. A bar graph may run horizontally or
vertically. The important thing to know is that the longer the bar,
the greater its value. Bar graphs are better for comparing larger
changes or differences in data among groups.

Compare groups
Look for differences in the heights of the bars. The bars show the
value of the groups. Refer to the scale range of the y-axis to
determine the actual differences.

For example, the following bar chart compares the counts of

different types of paint flaws. Peels are the most common, followed by Scratches, Smudges, and Other. The
counts range from about 6 to 15.

4. HISTOGRAM - A histogram is a graphical display of data

using bars of different heights. In a histogram, each bar group
numbers into ranges. Taller bars show that more data falls in that
range. A histogram displays the shape and spread of continuous
sample data.

Random sampling was taken of pedestrians on a street corner

walking to work one day. They were asked how many servings of
protein they ate, on average, daily. The data collected is displayed
in the histogram above:
Question: How many people say that they eat at least 4 servings of protein daily?
Interpretation: 8 people claim four servings per day, 3 claims five servings, and 1 claim seven servings, for a
total of 12.

5. PIE CHART - A circular chart which is divided into slices or portions

to illustrate proportion. A pie chart is a graphic that shows the breakdown
of items in a set as percentages by presenting them as slices of a pie. The
key to a pie chart is that all of the slices must equal 100%.

Interpretation: The following chart shows water usage. You can see that
toilet water usage is greater than shower water usage, and less water usage
goes to others that consist of 5.3%.

6. VENN DIAGRAM - A Venn diagram is a visual depiction of the

similarities and differences between two or more different items. It
consists of a series of shapes - usually circles - whose edges overlap.

Interpretation: This example illustrates the similarities

and differences between two ideas, such as
Series and Parallel Circuits. Notice the similarities
are at the intersection of the two circles.
