OPINON ESSAY

“Do YOU agree or disagree"

“To what extent do YOU agree or disagree?”
“Do YOU think it is a positive or negative development?”
“Discuss both views and give YOUR opinion”

If the question asks you: it asks for your view, not the views of other people. Just make
your opinion clear in the introduction, then explain it in the rest of the essay.

What you should write about depends on your opinion. You've got three choices: You
could say:

"Yes, I completely agree"

or "No, I completely disagree"

or "Well, I partly agree, I have a balanced opinion on this because I think on the one hand
this is true, but also this is true".

Intro: It is true that/ It is sometimes argued that (lead-in dẫ n và o chủ đề). While I agree
that __(cô ng nhậ n sự hợ p lý)__, I believe that _(phả n đố i từ tuyệt đố i)
Body 1: On the one hand, I agree that _____(support the statement)___.
Body 2: On the other hand, I support the view that/ I am of the opinion that_____(give
examples or arguments to point out that the statement is wrong)___.
Conclusion: In conclusion, while___(restate the statement)___, I do not believe that ___(you
reject the statement in some cases)__.
Nếu trong câ u hỏ i có từ tuyệt đố i (absolute words), ví dụ như: all, the best way, the only
solution, the most effective method... thì bạ n sẽ viết khá dễ:
Body 1: Trả lờ i câ u hỏ i, cô ng nhậ n sự hợ p lý củ a idea
Body 2: Phả n đố i từ tuyệt đố i. Ví dụ như "ALL children should be required to ..." -> Khô ng phả i tấ t
cả children đều nên bị bắ t buộ c. Lấ y ví dụ cụ thể.

disagree?

The best way for governments to solve the problem of traffic congestion is to provide free
public transport in 24 hours per day, and seven days a week. To what extent do you agree or
disagree?
- Body 1: Đồ ng ý là việc cung cấ p free public transport -> giả m thiểu tắ c đườ ng.
- Body 2: Tuy vậ y đó khô ng phả i là cá ch tố t nhấ t. Hã y chỉ ra cá c điểm yếu củ a giả i phá p này và đề

International community must act immediately to ensure all nations to reduce their
consumption of fossil fuels e.g gas and oil. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- Body 1: Đồ ng ý là cá c quố c gia nên hợ p tá c vớ i nhau để giả m tiêu thụ fossil fuels.
- Body 2: Tuy vậ y khô ng thể là m ngay đượ c vì cá c nguồ n nă ng lượ ng thay thế chưa hoà n toà n

Some argue that all young children should be required to stay with full-time education until
they are at least 18 years old. Do you agree or disagree?
- Body 1: Đồ ng ý là trẻ em nên đượ c tạ o điều kiện đi họ c cho đến 18 tuổ i - the age of maturity:
better preparation for future job application.
- Body 2: Tuy vậ y có nhiều gia đình khô ng có điều kiện cho con đi họ c, đặ c biệt là cá c gia đình
nghèo ở VN. Họ cầ n extra incomes no matter how small, vì vậ y children có thể giú p đỡ bố mẹ. Khi
đi họ c -> greater financial burden will fall on parents -> make the situation worse.

Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later. Some people think
that having these people to give a talk to school students is the best way to tell them
about dangers of committing a crime. Do you agree or disagree?
