Mental Maths:
Time – Finding the Day of the Week (Part 2)

Find the day of 12 February 2004 (a leap year).

STRATEGY
Step 1: To find the year calculation,
__ __
1 1  × 04 = 5 [multiply the last two digits of the year by 1 1 ]
4 4
Step 2: To find the sum of the year calculation, month code and day,
Year calculation = 5 [take the whole number only]
January 6 July 5
Month code = 2 [refer to the table]
February 2 August 1
Day = 12
March 2 September 4
5 + 2 + 12 = 19
April 5 October 6
May 0 November 2
June 3 December 4
Step 3: To find the day of 12 February 2004,
19 – 1 = 18 [subtract 1 from the result obtained in step 2 if the month falls in
January or February]
18 ÷ 7 = 2 R 4 [divide the result by 7]
Since the remainder is 4, the day of 12 February 2004 is Thursday.
Note: If the remainder is 0, it means Sunday.

Do these sums mentally.

1. 20 January 2004 = 6. 14 November 2000 =

2. 1 February 2000 = 7. 30 December 2000 =

3. 16 March 2004 = 8. 28 April 2004 =

4. 25 June 2004 = 9. 19 May 2000 =

5. 7 July 2004 = 10. 11 October 2004 =

10. Monday 9. Friday 8. Wednesday 7. Saturday 6. Tuesday 5. Wednesday 4. Friday 3. Tuesday 2. Tuesday Solutions: 1. Tuesday
