Lesson 2: Tools! When I was a child...!

Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will be able to:

• Talk about abilities in the past.

• Express when someone could do different things.

• Ask and answer about past and present abilities.

• Ask for information.

• Retell past events

Target language:

• Modal verb: “Could.” Past ability.

I could swim. I couldn’t play the piano.

Could you run when you were five? Yes, I could/ No, I couldn’t.

What could you do when you were three?

• Time clauses: When I was a child, I could…

• Extreme sports: climbing, parachute jumping, skating, skiing, surfing.

Recycled language:

• Simple past: verb to be (was, were).

Write some activities you could do when you were a child.

Atención: Como todos los verbos modales,


COULD es invariable, es decir, no cambia
según el pronombre. Example: I could play
. for hours. He could play for hours
Estructura de las oraciones con could
Could va siempre seguido de un verbo principal en infinitivo (sin to). La
estructura de las oraciones con could es:

Oraciones afirmativas:

Subject (sujeto) + could + verbo infinitivo.

Example: He could play the piano when he was a kid.

Oraciones negativas:

Subject (sujeto) + could not (couldn’t) + verbo infinitivo.

Example: She couldn’t believe what he said.

Oraciones interrogativas:

Could + subject + verbo infinitivo + ?

Example: Could you speak English when you were little?
