Semi Detailed Lesson Plan

Name: Types of Modal Verbs


Grade Level: 8
Subject: English

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. To acknowledge the quintessence and parlance of modal verbs in terms of everyday
context specially in the field of academe.
2. To exhibit courtesy in conversing from other people for the beneficial behavioral
interactions.
3. To produce written rules and regulations on how to act professionally inside the
classroom by incorporating modal verbs.

Anticipatory Set:
❖ The teacher will provide different scenarios regarding the different types of modal verbs
in terms of usage and the student will use his/her prior knowledge to generate their
answers by writing it on the board.
- Example:
“When you’re asking permission to borrow a ballpen from your classmate, how
would you say it?”

Direct Instruction:
A. Preliminary
- The teacher will shortly discuss what are modal verbs and how it is used in the
English language. Furthermore, in this part the teacher will get more responses to
the students to help build their own understanding about the lesson proper.
B. Developmental
- The teacher will discuss these things in order:
1. The Kinds of Modal Verbs (and it’s usage)
a. Likelihood
b. Possibility
c. Ability
d. Asking permission
e. Request
f. Suggestions or Advices
g. Command
h. Obligation
i. Habit
2. Using Modal Verbs
a. Simple Present Tense (Subject + modal verb + infirinitive form)
b. Simple Present Tense Questions (Modal verb + subject + infinitive
form)
c. Present Continous (Modal verb + be + verb ending with -ing)
d. Present perfect Continous (Modal verb + have been + verb ending
with -ing)
- never use the word “had” even if its in third person.
e. Simple Past and Past Continuos
- can and will can only be used
- (could/would + verb in infinitive)
f. Present perfect (past tense of the modal verb + have + past
participle of the verb)
g. Future Tense
- “will” is the standard usage
- use different modal verbs normally with the infinitive form
of the verb.

Guided Practice:
❖ After the discussion part the teacher will ask for questions and clarifications about the
lesson to further assess their knowledge intake throughout the lesson proper. If there are
questions or clarifications that teacher will take the quick recap of that part of the lesson.
if there are none, the teacher will proceed to a short seatwork that will be executed thru
recitations (9 items will do).
- Example:
“Identify what usage of modal verbs are given in the situations”

Closure:
❖ At this juncture, the teacher will give life lessons to the students that Modal Verbs aren’t
just only for the sake of grammatical context but also for the morality of speaking. This
emphasizes sensitivity towards other people in making requests, obeying, commanding,
and other verbal conversation that will spark goodwill.

Independent Practice:
❖ The class will be divided into groups and they will create written rules and regulations
on how to act professionally inside the classroom by incorporating modal verbs. The
teacher will show on how the groups will be graded.

Required Materials
❖ White board marker, notebook, manila paper, and tape

Assessment
❖ In line with the Guided Practice that was recited by the students before, the class
assignment will be to assess the different tenses to the 9 situations given. The answers
should rely on what was discussed earlier by the teacher.
