ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS (35hours).Maximum points to be earned are 70.

1. All the statements listed under are false. Correct them. Use the space provided only. (26 points)

a. Infiltration rate governs the spacing between two furrows.

_____________________________________________________________________________

b. 10% discharge variation is tolerated while designing drip irrigation.

_____________________________________________________________________________

c. Permanent sprinkler systems are chosen because of their low cost.

_____________________________________________________________________________

d. Deficit irrigation necessarily increases water productivity (yield per unit area).
_____________________________________________________________________________
e. Long daily working hours increase and higher system efficiency decrease the magnitude of
design discharge.
_____________________________________________________________________________
f. Bubbles operate at relatively low discharge matching with the intake capacity of the soil.
_____________________________________________________________________________
g. Filtration is the sole remedy when irrigation water contains bacteria and bacterial slimes.
_____________________________________________________________________________
h. Application depth depends on permeability of the soil.
_____________________________________________________________________________
i. Knowledge of overall efficiency is required to pin point problem spots during management.
_____________________________________________________________________________
j. C2 S4 is water quality which can be universally used.
_____________________________________________________________________________
k. Pumps with high discharge necessarily have high head.
_____________________________________________________________________________
l. Suction pipes can be extended to indefinite extent.
_____________________________________________________________________________
m. Irrigation interval (T) must be smaller than irrigation period (p).
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. 1000m2 areas having a single furrow discharging 100 l/min is irrigated. 100mm is the intended
irrigation depth and the water application efficiency of the irrigation is 75%. Ho w long might be
the duration of the irrigation? (6 points)

3. If the moisture contents of the soil after and before irrigation were 12 and 30% by weight and the
dry density of the soil was 1200Kg/m3 how much was the depth of application? (4 points)

4. The values given are moisture contents in grids before in parenthesis and after irrigation.
Compute uniformity and Adequacy of the irrigation. Values volume percents. (8 points)

8. What are basic water quality parameters in reference to irrigation? 4 points)

9. Three 2inch diameter siphons were supplying water to a given furrow. In three hours
irrigation period, all the three siphons were operating the first hour, two of them were
operating in the second and only one of them was operating in the last hour. Head
difference between the supply and the field channels was 20cm in all siphons. (8 points)
