FINERMAPS Worksheet
When you have drafted a topic and question, it’s time to determine if you have the makings of a good
project. Hulley’s FINERMAPS acronym is a helpful evaluation guide. Consider each point and ask if
your proposed idea holds up.

Proposal Research Discipline and IA Project Category/Topic: Research and Development

Proposed Research Problem Statement and Research Question

Problem Statement: How can we increase the speed and accuracy of language training models
depending on the differing complexities of the languages and size of the training dataset.

Research Question: How does the size of the training dataset and difference complexity of the
languages impact the speed of the training process and accuracy of the final training model when
training an AI language translation model using OpenNMT.

F: Feasible: You may have a brilliant research idea, but do you have the time, money, expertise, access,
etc. to carry it off? Next to interest, this is the most critical point for you personally to consider.

I have the ability to perform this task as I can access all of the resources, I need to create an neural
machine learning language model on the internet and through my computer.

I: Interesting: Can the topic keep you engaged? This is a biggie!

The topic can keep me engaged as I enjoy learning about the nuances of machine learning language
translation and applying it in a project scenario. This topic would also intrigue others due to the
relevance of the topic and the widespread use of common translation programs such as Google
translate in our connected world causing curiosity for the nuances and factors that influence the AI’s
capabilities.

N: Novel: Is there a gap in the current research the question can speak to? There must be the possibility
of finding a new understanding.

There is a current gap in current research as not much research focuses on the testing of OpenNMT
on a variety of different languages.

E: Ethical: Can you study the topic without risking harm to yourself and others? Can you protect the
confidentiality of those involved? Can you practice academic honesty in your study?
Name: Vishwa Munagapati

The study is ethical as it causes no harm, and I can practice academic honesty by properly citing
sources and giving credit wherever I can.

R: Relevant: Besides filling a gap in the current body of knowledge, would others want to know about
the topic?

Others would want to know more about this topic as machine learning has recently become
widespread in culture and many people want to know more especially about language translation.

M: Manageable: Do you have the necessary skills to handle this topic? (If you aren’t a math person, for
example, don’t choose a topic that requires complex number crunching.)

Yes, as a computer science student, I have the skills necessary to program and test such an idea.

A: Appropriate: Is this something a high school student like yourself should be doing? Is your school
likely to approve it?

Yes, this is something a high school student should be doing, and the school is likely to approve of it.

P: Potential Value and Publishability: Can the project result in something useful, and would a student-
orientated organization be interested in the findings?

This project can result in useful information in the world of AI language translation and a student-
oriented organization would be interested in the findings.

S: Systematic: Is there a logical way to study this topic? Are these appropriate methodologies you could
use?

There are logical ways to study this topic through experiments and these are appropriate
methodologies.
