Enzymes
Enzymes
Enzymes are one of the most important biological molecules that play a critical role in many of our body’s
functions
They are proteins that act as catalysis to speed up chemical reactions without being used by the reaction or
changed by the reactions
Enzymes work by buying specific substrate molecules and bringing about a chemical change converting
substrates into products
Enzymes are highly specific meaning that each enzyme have a unique function and is only able to catalyze a
specific type of reaction
Enzymes provide support for many important processes within the body. Some examples include:
The digestive system: Enzymes help the body break down larger complex molecules into smaller molecules,
such as glucose, so that the body can use them as fuel.
The specificity of enzymes allows our body to do many important functions like converting food into energy and
building many of our tissues
DNA replication: Each cell in the body contains DNA. Each time a cell divides, the cell needs to copy its DNA.
Enzymes help in this process by unwinding the DNA coils.
Liver enzymes: The liver breaks down toxins in the body. To do this, it uses a range of enzymes the facilitate the
process of destroying the toxins.
The active site is complimentary to substrate, so it fits and binds to form an enzyme-substrate complex.
