AIRCREW SURVIVAL FIELD TRAINING EXERCISE

SITUATION

1. One of the aims of the Air Cadet Movement is to introduce cadets to downed aircrew wilderness
survival. By participating in practical lessons on survival in an outdoor setting cadets will
develop confidence in their ability to use their surroundings to take care of themselves and each
other.

MISSION

2. Cadets from 351 Squadron will participate in an Aircrew Survival Field Training Exercise (FTX)
03-05 March 2023 at Shadow Lake Centre, 15041 Ninth Line, Stouffville ON, L4A 3E4.

EXECUTION:

3. GENERAL OUTLINE:

a. The exercise is an overnight event and will be conducted in Ten (10) Phases.

Phase 1: Planning Complete NLT 01 Dec 22

Phase 2: Advance Party 03 Mar 23 Advance Party picks up vehicles and supplies in
Deployment Markham and continues to Shadow Lake.

Phase 3: Squadron 04 Mar 23 Cadets arrive at Bur Oak Secondary School and
Arrival & Check-In 0730 hrs report for check-in, kit and health card check.

Phase 4: Squadron 04 Mar 23 Cadets and Staff are transported by bus to


Deployment 0800 hrs Shadow Lake.

Phase 5: Arrival Briefing 04 Mar 23 Cadets will receive an Operations Order Briefing
0830 hrs for the FTX including pertinent DND/CF policies
on Safety, Environmental Stewardship,
Harassment; and Personal Conduct.
3. GENERAL OUTLINE (Continued):

Phase 6: Training 04-05 Mar 23 FTX training commences on arrival and is


0900 hrs delivered in accordance with the schedule
provided in ANNEX D;

Phase 7: Tear Down 05 Mar 23 Cadets will de-camp, load squadron stores and
1330 hrs personal kit, and complete an environmental
sweep.

Phase 8: Debriefing 05 Mar 23 The CO/OIC will conduct a debriefing at end of


1515 hrs the exercise.

Phase 9: Rear Party 05 Mar 23 Rear Party returns supplies to Squadron Office
Departure 1545 hrs and return vehicles.

Phase 10: Squadron 05 Mar 23 Bus Departs for Bur Oak Secondary School and
Departure & Return to 1545 hrs Parents or guardians pick up cadets on Sunday
Unit afternoon.
4. GROUPINGS AND TASKINGS

a. Groupings
i. A total of 6 Officers and 92 Cadets will participate in the event.
ii. Staff and cadets will be grouped by Level
iii. 2 Officers (DND 404 license driver) and 6 cadets will form an Advance Party.

b. Taskings
iv. Detailed taskings IAW Operations Order.

5. COORDINATING INSTRUCTIONS

a. Registration:
All Cadets who will be in attendance (including Leaders and Level Instructors) must
register for the exercise utilizing the “sign up” located under the Warning Order on the
squadron website.
Cadets who are selected and appear on the nominal role must submit a signed permission
form (attached Annex A) to the Duty Desk NO LATER THAN 2000 HRS 23 FEB 2023
or they will de-selected and replaced by a cadet from the wait list.
b. Cancellation
i. Cadets will notify cancellations@351silverstar.com if they register and are unable
to attend.
ii. Request to withdraw within 5 days of activity must include an explanation of the
circumstances and to be approved on a case-by-case basis.
SERVICE SUPPORT
1. Financial
a) DND/SSC will provide all funding for this activity, there is no cost to cadets.
2. Dress The dress for this activity shall be:
a) Cadets
i. Cadets are to wear appropriate civilian attire.
ii. The FTX is conducted entirely outdoors with varying temperatures and weather.
Cadets are strongly encouraged to dress in layers so that they can respond
appropriately to any changes in the weather and to their changing levels of
physical activity and exertion.
iii. The personal kit list is attached here as ANNEX B.
b) Adult Staff
i. CIC are to wear CADPAD.
ii. CI/CV are to wear appropriate civilian attire.
3. Transport
a) Advance Party
i. Advance party will travel to and from the training location via DND provided SUV
or similar.
b) Cadets and Staff Deployment
i. This activity requires parent drop off and pick up at Bur Oak Secondary School.
ii. Staff and Cadets will travel to and from Bur Oak Secondary School to the training
location via school bus.
iii. Reporting location at Bur Oak Secondary School IAW ANNEX C.
4. Rations& Feeding
a) DND/SSC will provide all meals & rations for this activity scheduled as follows:
i. 04 Mar 2023: Lunch and Dinner
ii. 05 Mar 2023: Breakfast and Lunch
5. Water
a) Cadets are required to bring their own water bottles.
b) Water filling station will be located in the HQ (Shadow Lake Center – Dining Hall).
Multiple water jerry cans will be available in the training area for water refill.
6. Training Equipment:
a) DND and 351 RCACS will provide all necessary training equipment for this activity.
7. Personal Equipment:
a) ANNEX B to these Instructions details the personal kit list.
b) Please ensure all kit is clearly marked as the Crown/Squadron will not accept
responsibility for lost or stolen personal items. Cadets are cautioned to leave valuable at
home.
8. Accommodation:
a) Staff and Cadets will sleep in cabins.
b) Genders will be divided into separate groups for the exercise.
9. Hygiene
a) Personal and environmental hygiene practices should be promoted all time during this
exercise.
b) Cadets will practice proper hand washing as required during the day and immediately prior
to meals.
10. Medications
a) Unit Training Officers will be responsible for the identification and supervision of their own
cadets who require medication.
11. Smoking.
a) There will be no smoking permitted at this activity.
12. Visitors
a) Visitors, including parents and other spectators, are not permitted.
13. Medical & Emergency
a) First Aid: Minor injuries will be brought to the attention of the OPI and be handled by First
Aid trained personnel.
b) Emergency: Major injury response IAW the Emergency Response Plan.
14. Public Health Measure:
a) 351 Squadron will ensure they monitor changing conditions within their Public Health
Measures prior to conducting the approved activities.
