Illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles, and percentiles
(M10SP-IVa-1).

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
1. illustrate quartiles of an ungrouped data; and
2. solve quartile value of an ungrouped data
.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

C. Drill (Time allotment: 3 minutes)

“SHOW ME BOARD”
(Individual)
Direction: Simplify the following expressions. (The learners will use their
calculator/HiPer Scientific Calculator Application to find the answer)

1. (7 +1)
4
2
2. (11+1)
4
3
3. (15+ 1)

D. Motivation (Time allotment: 5 minutes)

“PAPER FOLDING”

Step 1. Fold the paper in half.

Step 2. Without unfolding the paper, fold it in half again.

How may equal parts will the sheet of paper have when it is unfolded?
Using the Mirriam-Webster Dictionary Application, pronounce and give the
meaning of the following words:

MEASURE (pronunciation) - (noun) the act or process of measuring.

POSITION (pronunciation) – (noun) an act of placing or arranging.

DIVIDE (pronunciation) – (verb) to separate into two or more parts, areas, or

groups.

QUARTER (pronunciation) – (noun) one of four equal parts into which

something is divisible.

Procedures:

1. Arrange the given data in ascending order.

2. Determine the median position.

3. Find the median.

4. How many scores below the median?

5. What is the middle value of the scores below the median?

6. Let the middle value of the scores below the median class be Q1.

7. How many scores above the median?

8. What is the middle value of the scores above the median?

9. Let the middle value of the scores above the median class be Q3.

Guide Questions:

1. How many data are there in the given distribution?

2. What formula did you use to find the median position?

2. ANALYSIS (Time allotment: 3 minutes)

Based from the activity, answer the following questions:

1. In how many parts are the quartile divided?
2. What part of the data is Q1? How about Q3?

3. What is the formula to find the Quartile Position?

4. Is the second quartile equal to Median? Why?

3. ABSTRACTION (Time allotment: 5 minutes)

Quartiles of Ungrouped Data

Quartiles – are the three score points which divide a distribution into
four equal parts.

Quartiles can be represented by the diagram below.

First Quartile (Q1) is a value such that at most one-fourth or 25% of

the data lower than Q1, and most three-fourths or 75% are greater than
Q1. It is also called the lower quartile.
Second Quartile (Q2) is a value such that at most one-half or 50% of
the data lower than Q2, and most one-half or 50% are greater than Q2.
It is also known as the median or the middle quartile.

Third Quartile (Q3) is a value such that at most three-fourths or 75% of

the data lower than Q3, and most one-fourth or 25% are greater than
Q3. It is also called the upper quartile.

Formula for Quartile Position of Ungrouped Data

k
Q k = (n+1)
4

Where: k = 1, 2, 3

n = number of samples

4. APPLICATION (Time allotment: 3 minutes)

Directions: Find the value of Q1, Q2 and Q3 of the set of scores of Grade 10-
Banaba in Long Test.

12, 5, 22, 30, 7, 36, 14, 42, 15, 53, 25, 6

IV. Evaluation (Time allotment: 5 minutes)

Directions: Write the letter of your answer on the space provided before each number.
