Installation of Hoist

A. Mounting of Davit
a. 1. The foundation needs to be completed prior supply of material at site , Pls ensure
foundation bolts are aligned as per drawing sent to you in order to ensure easy installation
on site .
B. Installation of Davit winch
a. Installation of the davit winch should be done after installation of the davit, same will
ensure that the wire ropes are aligned with the pulleys fitted on the Davit structure.
b. Davit winch foundation to be adequately designed and if possible to be connected to the
davit foundation by means of RCC beam structure .
C. Electrical

All Wiring must conform to National Electric Code Standards, in addition to any state and local
requirements.

1. Requirements:
The voltage supplied to this hoist must match the specification on the customer’ order to M S
ENGINEERS (3 PHASE 440V SUPPLY). Please ensure proper electrical supply to the
control panel as per design .

Please ensure adequate capacity of the wiring to supply power to the Davit winch motor
keeping in mind the high current requirement for the 3 phase motor .

Section II

Davit operation

M S ENGINEERS, recommends following the guidelines listed in Section II to properly operate your Davit .
These items are only a guide presented by M S ENGINEERS. The Hoist Operator MUST be instructed in the
safe and proper operation of hoist. The Hoist Operator must follow comply with regulatory agency requirements.
Please review the following Safe Hoisting Practices before using any M S ENGINEERS lifting appliance . These
practices MUST be employed during operation of the davit . Please nominate the hoist operator(s) for training in
operational , same will be carried out once by MS Engineering after installation of the Hoist.

A. Wire Rope Dead Ending

The following must be performed after the Davit installation has been completed .

Wire Rope: The Wire Rope must be secured to the dead ending of the system. The length of the wire
rope must be adjusted so that both winch drums have the same level of layering of the wire ropes . If
equal wires are not wound on the winch drum ,both floating blocks will not move with the same speed ,
thus will cause imbalance of the boat . Ensure the wires are evenly layered on the winch drum , uneven
layering can cause sudden slippage of wire and excessive loads on the Davit structure .

To dead end the wire rope:

Your hoist has been shipped with proper size and number of clamps for your hoist’ dead-ending and the
correct size thimbles as well.
a. Insert the proper sized thimble at the dead-ending location. Turn back the specified amount of rope
from the thimble or loop. Apply the first forged clip one base width from the dead end of the rope.
Apply U-Bolt over the dead end of wire rope. The live end will rest in the saddle of the U-Bolt.
Tighten all nuts evenly; alternate from one nut to the other until reaching the recommended torque.
b. Apply the second clip as near to the loop or thimble as possible.
Tighten all nuts evenly, alternating until the recommended torque.
c. Apply the third clip (if applicable) spaced evenly between the first and the second clip. Take up rope
slack & tighten all nuts evenly, alternating until the recommended torque
d. Note: Below is a typical depiction of cable clip configuration and the number of clips may
or may not be correct for this hoist. Hoists with greater or smaller cable diameters may
require more or less clips.

Turn Back Wire Rope

B. Push Button Station

The Davit winch motor is controlled at the push button station. Push Button Stations are
configured specific to your requirements. There are always hoist UP and DOWN buttons. There is
a master switch installed to disconnect power to the push button station , same to be switched off
after use.
Circuit breakers are installed inside the electrical control box to protect against overloading of the
circuits and damage due to short circuit.

C. Safe Practices

Hand operated and electric hoists and trolleys of all types are designed with the safety of the
operating personnel first in mind. Your own safety and that of your fellow workers will be assured
when overhead materials handling equipment is used as recommended by the manufacturer.
Disregarding such recommendations endangers life and property. Following are the basic safety
rules worthy of your careful consideration and attention.

a. Do not load beyond the Safe Working Load .

b. Conduct a periodic visual inspection for signs of damage or wear. Particular
attention should be paid to the cable and pulleys. If the cable shows signs of wear or
damage, or if the pulley or hook rings are distorted , call this to the attention of the
safety engineers before operating the hoist.
c. Whenever the boat is lowered in such a manner as to take the load off the wire
rope, the operator should determine before lifting , if the wire rope is properly
reeved, on the drum and the rings are sitting properly on both the hooks .
d. Always “inch” the hoist into the load. Running into the load at full hoist speed
imposes excessive overloads on the davit structure and could result in failure of
parts and/or supporting structures. This is particularly true with high hoisting
speeds.
e. Limit Switches are for emergency use only and should not be bypassed during
normal operation..” NEVER OPERATE THE HOIST BY OVERRIDING THE
LIMIT SWITCH , IT CAN LEAD TO SEVER INJURY , FATALITY OR
PROPERTY DAMAGE .
f. Be sure the hoist raises and lowers properly when the corresponding push buttons
or control ropes are operated. A reversal of direction indicates a phase reversal in
the current conductor, the reversal of the rope on the drum, or an interchange of
wires on a push button – any of which would cause the limit switch to be
inoperative. Do not operate the equipment under any circumstances until the trouble
has been found and corrected.

g. Ensure people inside the boat are safely seated before operating the winch

h. Do not jog controls unnecessarily. Hoist motors are general high torque, high slip
types. Each start causes an in rush of current greater than the running current and
leads to overheating and heat failure, or burn-out, if continues to excess

6
D. Structure
i. Davit structure will be subject to shearing forces during operation, thus visual inspection of
the structure should be performed and checked for deformations or cracks as mentioned in
the maintenance instructions
ii. Do not hang the boat midway for continued periods . Swinging of the boat can couse
damage to the davit foundations . It is recommended that the boat be stowed while resting
on the buffers provided for arresting swinging of the boat
iii. When lifting the boat , it is strongly recommended to avoid jerks by intermittent operation
of the winch . Please hoist the boat fully till the limit switch operates.

E. Lubrication:

1. HOOK BLOCKS:
Bearings pressed in Hook Blocks are pre-lubricated and regular lubrication is not required
2. PULLEYS :
a. All pulley bearings are pre lubricated and regular lubrication is not required
b. Please ensure steel ropes are well greased at all times to avoid mechanical
damage to the sheaves and the wire ropes . Greasing will also arrest rusting of
the wire ropes.

Refer to the Wiring Diagram in this manual to determine the particular configuration for you Davit.

Section III.
Maintenance of Davit

M S ENGINEERS, Inc. recommends following the guidelines listed in Section III to properly maintain
your hoist . Maintenance logs must be kept and all updated mandatory standards supersede the
following information.

A. INSPECTIONS / MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE .

The following parts should be inspected and periodic maintenance needs to be performed as per
schedule listed below . Please maintain accurate records of maintenance carried out as this will
reduce the possibility of breakdown of machinery .

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE .
( PLEASE ENSURE PROPER PPE IS WORN BEFORE CARRYING OUT ANY
MAINTENANCE )

WEEKLY MAINTENANCE

1. Slack Davit wires by lowering the boat to water level and inspect for broken strands and
kinks . Grease wires if required.

7
2. Check electrical wires for insulation damage and loose connections

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE

1. Slack Davit wires fully / Unwind from winch drums , wipe old grease and apply fresh grease.
2. Check wire retention arrangement on pulleys for abrasion damage , repair if required

ANNUAL MAINTENANCE

1. Check all pulley sheaves for grooving , replace if required.

2. Annual inspection of winch by authorized service agents

2.5 YEARLY MAINTENANCE
