Let’s Elaborate

Electrical Tools and Equipment

Most of electrical works cannot be done using bare hands. To work easily,
electrical tools or equipment are needed to perform specific jobs. Electrical Tools
and Equipment might help workers to save time, labor, and resources.

The following are common electrical tools and equipment needed in the
installation of electrical wiring:

I. Screw Drivers. These tools are

used to loosen or tighten width-
matched slotted screws. They
come in different sizes and
shapes and mostly made of
insulated handles and steel-
toughened and strengthened tip.

A. Standard/Flat Screwdriver.

It is used to drive wedge- shaped slotted

screws that resembles a negative (-) sign.

B. Philips Screwdriver.

This tool is used to loosen or tighten

cross- shaped slotted screws that
resembles a positive (+) sign.

C. Stubby Screwdriver.
A Standard or Philip Screwdriver
mainly used to drive screws in tight
space, comes with short shank and
shorted handles.

D. Allen Screwdriver/Wrench/Offset.
It is used to drive hexagonal slot
head that could be in the shape of
screw driver.

II. Wire puller (fish wire) is used to

pull wires inside conduits, tubes
or raceways.

III. Conduit bender/ hickey is a tool

used to bend metal pipe/ conduit/
tube/ raceways.

IV. HAMMERS. These are made of plastic or rubber, hard steel and wood.
Driving and pulling out nails is its main function. The following are types of
hammer:
A. Claw hammer B. Mallet (rubber head) C. Ballpeen hammer

V. Pliers. These tools are used in handling and twisting wires and cables. They
are made with either insulated or uninsulated handles and steel toughened
grip.

A. Combination Pliers (Lineman’s

Pliers). This is used usually used
by linemen in doing heavy tasks
for gripping, holding, and cutting
electrical wires and cables and
even small nails.

B. Side Cutting Pliers. This is used

by electricians for cutting fine,
medium, and big wires and
cables.

C. Long Nose Pliers.

It can reach tight spaces or small
openings and operated in making
terminal loops and for cutting and
holding wires.

VI. Wire Stripper. A tool used for

removing insulation of medium
sized wires ranging from
gauge #10 to gauge #16.

passage of wires and conduits.

Common types of drilling tools and equipment are:

A. Portable Electric drill.

A drilling equipment used on
metal sheets and concrete walls
to make holes with a chuck
capacity of ¼”to 3/8”.

IX. Hacksaw. This tool is used to

cut metal conduit and armored
cable.

Three Main Classification of Tools and Equipment

Tools are considered as extension of human hand thus increasing speed, control and
precision. It can be used to effortlessly accomplish electrical task however not
consumed in the process.

1. Hand tools are tools manipulated by hands without using electrical energy such
as: puller, hacksaw, pull-push rule, pliers, hammer, and others.

2. Machine/Power tools are tools manipulated by our hands and with the use of
electrical energy such as: electric drill, grinding wheels, vacuum cleaner and others.
Below are the types of Machine Tools:

a. Pneumatic tools are tools or instruments activated by air pressure.

Downloaded by Mark Moblanco (markmoblanco1297@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|29337441

b. Hydraulics. An equipment used with a pressure fluid oil to accomplish work.

c. Electric tools are hand tools or instruments activated by electricity.

3. Measuring Tools are used to measure currents, voltages, resistances, wattages

and other important elements in electrical works.

Electrical Supplies and Materials

Electrical materials are industrialized and created for a distinct purpose such as
to:

1. control the flow of current in an electrical circuit;

2. carry electrical current from the source to the load or current consuming device;
3. hold and secure wires to its fixtures indoor or outdoor; and
4. protect houses, buildings, appliances’ and instruments from any destruction and
damage.

The following are the most commonly used electrical materials.

I. Convenience outlet- It is a device usually fastened on the wall or

connected in an extension cord, where male plug is inserted and acts
as a convenient source of electrical energy for current consuming
appliances.

It maybe single, duplex, triplex or multiplex and could be surface type or flush
type.

Surface type Flush Type

II. Male plug- a device inserted to a convenience outlet to conduct

electric current.

lOMoARcPSD|29337441

III. Lamp holders- devices that hold and protect the lamp and are also
called as ―Lamp Sockets/Receptacles.

Flush type Hanging (chain)

These come in many designs and sizes. They are classified as flush,
hanging (weatherproof/chain) and surface types.

Surface type Hanging (weather)

IV. Switch - a device that connects and disconnects the flow of electric
current in a circuit. There are many shapes, designs, and types and
they are classified as hanging, flush, and surface types.

Flush type Hanging Surface Type

V. Fuse - When a short circuit and overload happens, a circuit

protective device-fuse were used that automatically blows and cut
the current connection.

Plug type Knife-blade Cartridge

lOMoARcPSD|29337441

VI. Circuit Breaker - a protective device used to automatically cut the

current when trouble in the circuit such as short circuit or overload
occurs.

VII. Junction Box - An octagonal shaped electrical

material made of either metal or plastic (PVC)
where the connections or taps of wires are
being done and where the flush type lamp
holder is attached.

VIII. Utility Box - a rectangular shaped metallic

or plastic (PVC) material in which flush type
convenience outlet and switch are attached.

IX. Flat Cord- A duplex stranded wire commonly

used in extension cord assembly and for
temporary wiring installation.

X. Electrical Wire/Conductor- electrical

material that could be:
a. Stranded wire which is made of
multiple strands joined together to make a
single
wire.
b. Solid wire is made of a single strand of
copper or aluminum wire. These are used
in wiring installation inside and outside
the buildings.

Downloaded by Mark Moblanco (markmoblanco1297@gmail.com)

protection and insulation. These could be rigid metallic, flexible rigid
metallic conduit (FMC), nonmetallic (PVC), and flexible non-metallic
or corrugated plastic conduit (CPC).

Metallic tubing Rigid Non- metallic Tubing Flexible Non-metallic Tubing

XII. Clamps- electrical materials used to hold

electrical conduits in its proper
position.
