Learning Content:

MEASURING TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS

Measurement is the process or the result of determining the ratio of a physical

quantity, such as a length, time, temperature, etc., to a unit of measurement, such as
the meter, second or degree Celsius. The science of measurement is called
metrology.

The English word measurement originates from the Latin mēnsūra and the Verb
metiri through the Middle French mesure.

Electrical measuring tools and instruments are sensitive and delicate so extra
care is necessary in handling them. These are used to measure currents, voltages
resistances, wattages, and other important elements in electrical works. This topic
will tackle the function/use of each measuring tool and instrument used in doing an
electrical task. Different kinds of measuring tools and precision measuring
instruments are as follows:
Test Light- is a pocket size tool used to test the line wire or circuit if there is current
in it.

Micrometer- is used to measure the diameter of wires/conductors in circular mils. It

can measure small and big sizes of wires and cables.

Wire Gauge- is used in determining the size of wires/conductors. The gauge ranges
from 0 to 60 A.W.G (American wire gauge).
Ruler/foot rule- is a measuring tool used to measure length, width and thickness of
short flat object and in sketching straight lines.

Pull-Push Rule- is a measuring tool used to measure the length of an object in

centimeter and inches.

Ammeter- is an instrument used to measure the amount of electrical current

intensity in a circuit. The unit of measure is ampere (a). It is connected along or
series to the circuit.

Voltmeter- is an instrument used to measure electrical pressure or voltage of a

circuit. The unit of measure is volt (v). This is connected across or parallel to the
circuit.
Clamp Ammeter- is also called tong-tester. It is used to measure current flowing in a
conductor. It is clamped or hanged in a conductor.

Volt-Ohmmeter (VOM)- otherwise called as Multi-tester; is used to measure the

voltage, resistance and current of a circuit. It is connected in parallel or series with
the circuit depending on what to measure.

THE MULTITESTER

The Multi-tester or multi-meter is sometimes called the VOM (voltmeter, ohmmeter,

milliammeter). It is the best instrument that can measure voltage, resistance and
current.

It is generally made of two types:

 Analog.
 Digital.

POINTER - The needle-shaped rod that moves over the scale of a meter. Pointer It
is mechanically connected to the moving coil. It indicates the measured values on
the multimeter.
RANGE SELECTOR KNOB - (Selector switch) makes it possible to select different
functions and range of the meter.

ADJUSTMENT SCREW - makes it possible to adjust the pointer to the zero position
of the scale.

SCALE - is a series of marking used for reading the value of a quantity. Scale can
have different types of scale, for voltage and current readings the scales have mostly
linear which means equal division for resistance.

ZERO OHM ADJUSTING KNOB - is used to zero-in the pointer before measuring
resistance.
TEST PROBES positive (red), negative (black) - is used to connect the circuit to the
electrical components being tested.

A. Proper care and maintenance of the multi-tester.

1. Read manual of instructions on how to operate the multi-tester.

2. In reading the amount of voltage, always start with the highest range to avoid
reading voltage higher than the tester setting.
3. Be sure that the tester is set to the correct range setting: resistance range when
measuring the ohm, voltage range when measuring voltage and ammeter range
when measuring the value of electric current.
4. Always check the condition of its battery. Worn out batteries will damage the
internal setting of the tester.
5. When the tester is not in used or will be stored, set the selector switch to 1000V or
to OFF position.
6. Never drop the tester.

B. How to read the meter scale of the multi tester

To read the resistance range of the multi-tester, the given table below will be used.
The unit of measurement to be used to determine its resistance is ohm.

Range 0-2 2-10 10- 20 20- 50 50 - 100 100-200

CONTINUITY LAMP TESTER

Continuity Lamp Tester has been the favorite of most electricians particularly
the appliance repairman for many decades. The test voltage in this circuit comes
from 230V AC power line through an ordinary plug and appliance cord. A 230V lamp
rated at 100W serves as the indicating device. A set of standard test probes is
provided which will allow the user to apply the test voltage to a point in the appliance
or any electric circuit for troubleshooting purposes quickly and with reasonable
safety.

You will find out the lamp always is connected in series with the load or circuit
under test. With this circuit arrangement, any current forced through the circuit under
test also flows through the test lamp. Touching the test probes together or applying
them to continuous circuit allows current to flow through the circuit where the lamps
burn at full brilliance. When the test probes are apart or are connected across an
open circuit fault, the current cannot flow through the circuit and the lamp does not
glow.

Here are the following materials needed for making continuity lamp tester:

Incandescent bulb- is an electric light with a wire filament heated to a high

temperature, by passing an electric current through it, until it glows with visible light
(incandescence). And serve as the indicating device.
Plug- - a device inserted to a convenience outlet to conduct electric current. A flat
cord is attached to it on one end and the other end is connected to a current
consuming instrument or appliance.

Duplex cord- Is a duplex stranded wire used for temporary wiring installation and
commonly used in extension cord assembly. It comes in a roll of 150 meters and with
sizes of gauge # 18 and gauge #16 AWG (American wire gauge).

Test probes- Is a physical device used to connect electronic test equipment to a

device under test (DUT).

Bulb guard (auto-trouble reflector)- It is a primary object of this invention to

provide a unitary guard and reflector structure, thus obviating the necessity for
separate guards and reflectors, such as hereto fore has been the case and wherein
the guard assembly need not be disassembled or removed from the holder or handle
to remove or replace the lamp bulb.
Bulb socket- A waterproof socket construction suitable for use in connecting an
electric bulb to a lamp body. And use to test the voltage in the convenience outlet.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES:

1. Do not clown around or engage in horseplay.
2. Report all injuries at once.
3. Keep the floors around your work area clean.
5. Use appropriate tools correctly.
6. Wear all the PPE needed in this job.
7. Do not touch the bare part of the wire, you may be electrocuted that may cause of
your death.

Steps in making continuity lamp tester

1. Prepare your schematic diagram and pictorial drawing.
2. Secure materials needed.
3. Have on the hand tools require by the job.
4. Make the connection following your working drawings.
5. Check connections by tracing the flow of current in the continuity lamp circuit.
6. Insert test bulb to the socket.
7. Mount your lamp guard properly.
8. Test continuity lamp circuit by shorting the two probes.

Activity

Direction: Complete the diagram by connecting the components to make a continuity

lamp tester.

Remember

 Continuity lamp tester is one of those existing testers that will help and guide
us to detect a continuity in a circuit either it is good or shorted.

Checking Your Understanding

Direction: Make a video/vlog demonstrating on how to make and use a continuity

lamp tester with guidance of your guardian.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES:

1. Don’t clown around or engage in horseplay.
