Group Topic: Saying Goodbye

CNL-520: Peer Review/Self-Review and Reflection

Part 1: Reflection
Directions: After the group meeting, reflect on the group experience and answer the three
questions listed below. Provide short answers of 75-150 words each for the following
questions/statements. Do not exceed 200 words for your response.

1. What specific contributions did you make in the group session?

During group we discussed saying goodbye and different ways to say goodbye. I shared
experiences of my mother passing and how her death impacted me. It was difficult as the
topic is one that is personal and still hard to discuss but I was able to share details with
the group and receive great support. I also discussed how the stages of grief were

facilitator allowed us to feel more trusting and comfortable with each other to share
information that is more personal and difficult to discuss.

2. What stage of development do you believe this group to be in currently? Explain.

3. Include any observations and comments on the process of the group.

This group ran very smoothly. Victoria had a great power point which helped keep the
group on track. The questions that were asked helped guide our discussion and helped
members such as myself share in a structured format. The group was open with each other
and helped support one another when we were sharing our stories about loss and grief and
how we handled the experience. The group also was also very easy to transition from
question to question while supporting and encouraging each other with different ideas on
how to cope with loss, grief and difficult goodbyes. One group member shared a great idea
on writing a letter to a loved one who passed away as a way to vent and say things we were
not able to before we lost them.

5. The following are skills the group leader did very well (Refer to the skills listed on
the Group Tips and Counseling Skills document):
Victoria displayed great active listening skills and summarizing of information that was
shared and overall thoughts that were discussed. She also displayed reflecting skills
throughout the session and helping us feel understood and heard while sharing. I think
Victoria also did a good job at helping us confront issues we struggled to discuss and helped
give a slight push or encouragement to share without being pushy or overbearing.

6. The following are areas of skill improvement for the group leader (Refer to the skills
listed on the Group Tips and Counseling Skills document):

Victoria overall did a great job but one area we could have improved on would be our goal
setting, we did not set clear goals but had broad goals. We did not evaluate the progress of
the group or how to evaluate ourselves and what we took out of group or the progress we
made on ourselves.
