A Detailed Lesson Plan

In Teaching Math in Primary Grades

Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: Grade 2

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of subtracting2–3-

digit numbers with minuend up to 999 without regrouping.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to apply subtraction of 2-3-digits
numbers with minuend up to 999 without regrouping in mathematical problems
and real-life situations.
Competency: The learners visualize, represents, and subtracts 2-to-3-digit
numbers with or without regrouping.

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
 Demonstrate understanding of problems solving using
subtraction.
 Write subtraction sentences correctly and solve problems.
 Students can use the things they learn in the lesson to
calculate properly the change they get or reserve.

II. Content: Subtracting 2-3-digits numbers with minuend up to

999without regrouping.
III. Learning Resources:
 GRADE 2 Mathematics Learners’ Module
 GRADE 2 Mathematics Teachers’ Guide
IV. Procedure:

A. Preparatory Activities
 Prayer
Father God,
As we start this new day for new
learning, we ask for Your guidance.
Lead us all the way. May You let us see
through Your eyes, listen through Your
ears, and speak with Your
Mouth.
Be with us as we explore the world.
Give us the heart to love and be kind to
one another. Please watch over all
our teachers, children, and families.
In Jesus’ name. Amen

B. Presentation of the lesson

I will give first the definition of

subtraction.
and subtraction without regrouping.
The terms of subtraction are minuend,
subtrahend, and difference.

Subtraction is an arithmetic operation

that represents the operation of removing
objects from a
collection.

Subtraction without regrouping means

that the number in a place value group of
the
number you’re subtracting from is larger
than the number in a place value group
of
the number you are subtracting.

For example: (58 – 15 = 43)

Let us recall the terms of subtraction.

Minuend- is the number from which

another number is subtracted.
Subtrahend- is the number subtracted 36 – minuend
or 12 – subtrahend
taken away.
Difference- is the answer in subtraction. 24 – difference

Class, can you define what are they?

36 – 12 = 24
Thank you so much that is correct.

The minuend is the starting point, the

subtrahend is the subtraction from the
minuend and the difference are the final
result.

C. Development of the lesson

A group of children will attend their

taekwondo class. Let’s see the problem
below.

 Mr. Gabriel have 46 pupils

in his taekwondo class. Out
of this number, 14 are girls.
How many are boys?

Let us use the steps in solving word

problems.

Express the facts: 46 pupils, 14 are girls.

How many are boys?

Let’s solve the problem:

1. What are the given?

2. Draw a table like this:

3. Write 46-14 in their place value.

4. Subtract the given number.

Analysis

numbers?
Begin with the ones then
the tens.
3. Where did you begin in
subtracting?

Abstract
Notice that in the activity a condition was
given when you were asked to find the
given problem. And their given was
involving subtracting without regrouping.
Let’s go back to the question a while ago
how do we solve subtraction without
regrouping?
In subtracting bigger numbers. It is
easier to arrange the minuend and
subtrahend in a column. Pay attention to
the place value.
Subtract the ones then subtract the tens.

Therefore, what is subtraction without

regrouping?

Subtraction without
regrouping means that the
number in a place value
group of the number
you’re subtracting from is
larger than the number in
a place value group of the
number you are
subtracting.
(Answer may vary)

Did you understand the process of

solving subtraction without regrouping?
