DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATH

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Visualize the concept of addition;
b. add one to three-digit numbers; and
c. solve word problems involving addition.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Addition of whole numbers
Reference: Teaching Mathematics in the Primary Grade (pages: 5-10)
Materials: Manila Paper, Marker, and Tape
Teaching Strategies: Direct teaching Approach, Cooperative Learning
Approach, and Practical work Approach.
Values Integration: Attentiveness, Cooperation

III. Procedures:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

 Preparatory Activities

 Prayer

Everybody please stand-up.

Let us pray. In the name of
the Father, the Son, the Holy
Spirit, Amen.

 Greetings
(The pupils recite the prayer)
Okay, Good Morning Class!

 Classroom Management
Good morning teachers!
Before you take your seats,
please pick a piece of papers
under your chairs and arrange
your chairs properly.

 Checking of Attendance

Is everybody present today?

Yes teacher!
Very Good!

 Reviewing previous
lesson/presenting the new
lesson

Okay, before we proceed to

our topic for today, I will ask
you question first.

What was the topic that

being discussed earlier?

If you want to answer,

please raise your hand. Do
not answer in chorus. Okay?

So, who wants to answer?

(Pupils raised their hands)

Yes, (name of the student)

It’s all about Place Value teacher.

Very Good!

So, I guess all of you know

what is place value, right? Yes Teacher!

 Presentation

That’s great, so now, we will

proceed to our next topic.
The Addition of whole
numbers.
 Motivation

But before we start, everybody

please stand as we will be
having our motivation. Do you
know the mathematics dance?

Very Good! Please be seated.

 Discussion
So now, I want you to listen
carefully because we will be
having our short activity after. Is
it clear?
Yes, Teacher!
(The teacher starts discussing)

ADDITION is the process of

putting two or more numbers or
things together. For instance, let
us illustrate the following: 3
mangoes added by 4 mangoes
total of 7 mangoes.
Understand?
Yes ma’am.
Okay, now does anyone of you
knows what this 3 added by 4,
called?

Yes?

Very Good. Addends ma’am.

How about the total or the result

of the addends? What does it
call?

Yes?

Very Good. Sum ma’am.

So, the numbers that being

added is called Addends and
the total is called Sum.

So now, let’s proceed to the

PROPERTIES OF ADDITION
1. Communicative Property
of Addition (CPA)
You learned above that
4+3=7. What would be
the answer if we change
the order of the addends
into 3+4?

It shows that 4+3=3+4=7.

This is called
Communicative
Property of Addition
(CPA). It says that the
order of the addends
does not affect the sum.
Yes, ma’am.
Understand class?
Very good, just always
remember that even you
exchange the position of
the addends, it won’t
affect the sum.

Next is,

2. Associative Property of
Addition (APA)
Another property of
addition is Associative
Property. It says that
changing the grouping of
the addends does not
affect the sum. For
example, the sum of
(8+7) +2 is equal to the
sum of 8+ (7+2).

(8+7)+2= 8+(7+2)
15 +2=8+9
17 = 17

When you solve a

problem like this, always
solve the problem inside
the parentheses. To Yes, Teacher
make it easier to solve.
Okay?

Next is,

3. Identity Property of
Addition (IPA)
The Identity Property
states that the sum of a
number and zero is the
same number.
Ex. 8+0= 8, 0+35=35,
1+0= 1.

It is very understandable,
everything that you
added with zero is always
equal to the higher
number that being added. Yes, Teacher!
Understand?
Now, let’s proceed to the

Adding Two- to Three- Digit

Numbers

To add two- to three-digit

numbers, follow the steps
below.

Step 1: Arrange the numbers in

column so that digits of the
same place value are aligned.
For example, let’s find the sum
of 74 and 162.

Hundreds Tens Ones

Place Place Place

7 4
+ 1 6 2

Step 2: Add the digits in the

ones place, tens place,
hundreds place.

Hundreds Tens Ones

Place Place Place

7 4
+ 1 6 2

In the tens place, since 7 tens

plus 6 tens total 13, then
rename 13 tens as 1 hundred
and 3 tens; write the 3 tens in
the tens digit of the sum and
regroup the 1 hundred with the
hundred digits of the addends,
then add.
Hundreds Tens Ones
Place Place Place
1
7 4
+ 1 6 2

2 3 6

Then the sum of 74 and 162 is 236.

Did you get what I was saying class?

If don’t please tell me ug asa mo nag
libog. So that I will explain it once
again. No ma’am.
No ma’am.
So, questions?
Clarifications?

Okay, so I guess you all understand

everything. Now please get ¼ sheet of
paper and answer this.

IV. Evaluation
A. Give the missing addends or sum. Then identify the property of addition
shown in each number. Write CPA, APA, IPA only.
1) 3 + 9 + 6 = ___ + 9 + 3
2) (8 + 3) + ___ = 8 + (3 + 6)
3) ___ + 8 = 8
4) 12 + 9 = 9 + _____
5) 76 + 0 = _____

B. Solve the following problems.

1. Ryza has 24 marbles. Melba has 8 marbles more than Ryza. How many
marbles do the two girls have in all?

2. At the mall, Karl spent ₱145 on the first store and ₱248 in the second
store. After which, he has ₱120 left. How much money did he start with?

3. Michael and Nicko each picked a number from a box. Nicko’s number is
twice large as that of Michael’s. The sum of their numbers is 42. What is
Nicko’s number?
ANSWER SHEET:
A.
1) 3+9+6=6+9+3 CPA
2) (8 + 3) + 6 = 8 + (3 + 6) APA
3) 0+8=8 IPA
4) 12 + 9 = 9 + 12 CPA
5) 76 + 0 = 76 IPA
