POWER

It is an expression in the form of an where a is the base and

n is the exponent. To evaluate a power, multiply a to itself n
times and then simplify.

rational?
RATIONAL EXPONENTS
Third Quarter Lesson 3
RATIONAL EXPONENTS
are power expressions with exponents that are in fraction form.
To simplify rational exponents, the laws of exponents will be
applied. To do that, follow the steps:

(1) EXPRESS the base to its equivalent power where

the denominator of the exponent will be the same as
its exponent.

(2) SIMPLIFY the expression using the power rule.

Evaluate the following rational expressions.

For more examples, see page 102.

a 252 52 2 =5

b

2 4 =3+2=5

4

d 362 − 42 62 2 − 22 2 =6−2=4
NOTE: Memorize the powers by
making a table consisting of powers
with different integer exponents
written in ascending order. Then, be
familiar with the values to easily
express the given numbers into
powers.

ACTIVITY 3
Create a rational exponent resulting to natural numbers
from 1 to 10. Make your expressions challenging so others
may not see it instantly. Then, write your expressions legibly on
cards. Show your computation at the back of your cards.

Front part of the card: 27 + 16

How Do I Become More Rational?

1. Accept the challenge to develop your

rational thinking.

Becoming more rational begins

with changing the way you
process through events and the
way that you think. Instead of
looking at this change as work,
try viewing it as a challenge or
an opportunity to grow.

2. Confront your cognitive biases.

A key to thinking rationally is to be honest about
cognitive biases you may have. As a rational
thinker, you will be called upon to make your own
opinions and have the rationale to back them up.
Make an effort now to confront any tendencies you
may have to think in ways that detract from your
good judgment or rational thinking ability. If you
find yourself jumping to conclusions or making
assumptions, you may have stumbled upon a bias
you can work on.
How Do I Become More Rational?

3. Practice your rational thinking habits.

Developing a more rational way of thinking takes
time, energy, and effort. In order to establish good
rational thinking habits make sure that you are
taking the time to consistently practice. While it
may take significant time in the beginning, as you
continue to make the practice more dominant in
your life, it should take less and less time.
