PART 2: Cascode for Gain

1. OP Analysis
Create a new cell and schematic. Construct the circuit.
plot VDS vs VB:

from figure Vb is 1.026v

Simulate the DC OP point.

Check that all transistors operate in saturation.

- Yes they do, As shown above
Do all transistors have the same vth? Why?
Body effect: increasing Vs or decreasing Vb will increase Vth.
DIBL: (Drain induced Barrier Lowering). Electric field from drain affects threshold voltage
appears more in short channel.
What is the relation between gm and gds?
gds << gm
What is the relation between gm and gmb?
gmb < gm
What is the relation between cgs and cgd?
cgs > cgd
What is the relation between csb and cdb?
cdb < csb
2. AC Analysis

Report the Bode plot (magnitude) of CS and cascode

Use calculator to create expressions for circuit parameters:

Using small signal parameters from OP simulation, perform hand analysis to calculate DC
gain, BW and GBW of both circuits.

CS Cascode
Dc gain 88.65u 3123.38u
BW 362k 2.598k
UGF 32.17M 811.56
GBW 0.03217 811.56

Compare Analytical with simulation.

HAND simulation
BW 362K 2.598K 358.5K 9.88k
GBW 32.17M 811.56 31.86M 30.69M
UGF GBW GBW GBW GBW

BW is inversely proportional to R.
In CS it has low gain with high bandwidth while in Cascode things are opposite and that’s
why they both have almost the same GBW and UGF.
