GEC 5 ART APPRECIATION

Analyze the following artwork applying the step-by-step process you learned in class (Description,
Analysis, Interpretation, and Judgment). Write your analysis on a yellow paper. You will be
graded according to the following:

a. Insightful thinking (10 pts) – the reflection/reaction/insights manifest the ability of the
student to think and learn on his/her own. Ideas have implications for future learning.
b. Analysis (20 pts) – there is depth in the analysis and insight formulation was rooted
on genuine experience.
c. Making connections (15 pts) – the insights are derived not only from self, but
connectedness of present and previous knowledge is apparent.

One of the pioneering figures in the modern art movement in Philippines, National Artist
Victorio Edades’ works bridged post-impressionism with the inherent romanticism of Philippine
folk life, the genre prevalent in the oeuvres of the academic realists of the 1920s. These works
from a later period in the artist’s career show how Edades’ figuration involved the simplification of
structures into gestural forms, inadvertently drawing out and capturing the simple charm of the
idealized provincial life that the artist saw.
