- During the 19th century, the Philippines was under Spanish colonial rule and its main
activities included agriculture, fishing, and trade. The country was known for producing
and exporting crops such as sugar, tobacco, and abaca to other countries. Religion played
a significant role in the Philippines due to the influence of Spanish colonial rule, and the
Spanish government used religion as a tool for social control. Missionaries were sent to
the country to spread Christianity and establish churches, with the construction of many
prominent churches and cathedrals throughout the country. The Philippines experienced
significant social and political changes during the 19th century, including the rise of
nationalism and the eventual struggle for independence from Spanish colonial rule.

from one centered on agriculture to one that was more commercial and industrialized. As
a result, a prosperous merchant class grew, leaving the working people in poverty. Also
in the social aspect, the Spanish influence on the Philippines can be seen in many aspects
of Filipino culture, including language, religion, and architecture. One of the most
significant impacts was the introduction of Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism,
which remains the dominant religion in the Philippines to this day.

3. What were the cultural influences of the Chinese mestizos on Philippine society?

- The Chinese mestizos, or people of mixed Chinese and Filipino heritage, had a
significant influence on Philippine society and culture. They introduced Chinese customs,
traditions, and practices, such as the use of herbal medicine and feng shui, which became
integrated into Philippine culture. Chinese mestizos also played a significant role in the
economy, as many were wealthy businessmen who owned large companies and
controlled trade. Their influence can still be seen today in many aspects of Philippine
culture, such as food, language, and traditions.
