Friday: Short Story (10 points)

Directions: Read “Apollo Thirteen: Mission Highlights.” Use the “claim, evidence,
reasoning” boxes to answer the question below.

Why was this mission sometimes referred to as a “successful failure”?

Finish this claim:

The mission was sometimes referred to as a successful failure because the crew
returned safely even though the odds were stacked against them.

Copy and paste your evidence here (direct quote):

The chances of short circuits caused apprehension, but thanks to the safeguards
built into the command module after the disastrous Apollo 1 fire in January 1967, no
arcing took place. The droplets furnished one sensation as we decelerated in the
atmosphere: it rained inside the CM. Four hours before landing, the crew shed the
service module; Mission Control had insisted on retaining it until then because
everyone feared what the cold of space might do to the unsheltered CM heat shield.

Connect the claim and evidence with reasoning (finish the sentence):

From this, we learn it's called a successful failure because the crew got home
safely even though it wasn't going good for them.
