12. Teaching Learning Process :
Setting the Scene
Getting engaged to the lesson by playing a video clip about the
first Sri Lankan patient of COVID-19 epidemic, who is a tour
guide and relate the job role of him to the functions of operating
system through a discussion by asking the following questions from
the students,
1. What is the job of the patient?
Students: Tour guide
2. What are the duties of a tour guide?
Students: Translating, guiding, being an intermediator
3. What acts as an intermediator between the computer and
human?
Students: An operating system
(04 mins)

Step 01
Arrange the class into six groups according to students’ ability
levels (as shown below) by changing students’ seating places.
Next, distribute the activity sheets among these groups and ask
students do engage in the activity of writing the functions of an
operating system by following the instructions on them.
 Fast Learners - 2 Groups (Annex 2.1.1)
 Medium Learners - 2 Groups (Annex 2.1.2)
 Slow Learners - 2 Groups (Annex 2.1.3)
While students engage in the activity observe them and help them in
their difficulties.
(07 mins)

Step 02
Discuss students’ answers using the power point presentation
(Annex 2.1.4) by randomly getting the answers from the students.
At
the end of each answer motivates them by clapping.
(05 mins)

Step 03
Distribute annex 2.1.5 among the six groups as 2 pictures for each
to conduct the activity of categorizing the different operating
systems as,
1. Operating systems in computers
2. Operating systems in phones
Next, draw a table with 2 columns, one for computers and another
for phones and ask each group to come and paste the correct
pictures
of operating systems. Finally, discuss the correct answers using the
powerpoint presentation (Annex 2.1.6) and appreciate students by

giving smiley faces for each group who answered correctly.
(06 mins)

Step 04
Ask students to turn on the nearby computer in order to give them
the
experience of how the operating system loads. Here while students
turn on the computers, observe them and discuss why an operating
system is important.
(04 mins)
Summary
Summarize the lesson by illustrating a concept map on the topic
‘Operating Systems’ by conducting a discussion with students about
the key points of today’s lesson. (Annex 2.1.7)
(03 mins)

13. Evaluation : Distribute 4 A4 papers (which were numbered from 1 to 24) to each
group and ask group leader to select a chit from the secret box
which includes the following topics,
1. Operating Systems
2. Functions of operating systems
3. Operating systems used in computers
4. Operating systems used in phones
Next, ask each group to make 4 questions from the topic they got
within 2 mins. While students make the questions observe them.
After students finish making the questions, tell them that teacher is
going to read a number and the student with that question number
should stand up and select another student and ask the question he
prepared. Likewise evaluate all the students and finally give a clap
and motivate all of them.
(10 mins)

14. Extended Work : Ask students to prepare an article on ‘Operating Systems’ for the
notice board.
