In your journey through the discussions and different tasks, you are expected to:
1. realize opportunities and challenges in media and information;
2. classify aspects of media literacy such as audience, content, and effects; and
3. research and cite recent examples of the power of media and information to
effect change.
What I Know
Write on a sheet of paper whether the statement of each item is TRUE or FALSE.
3. Abuse in media and information usage can risk the consumer himself/herself.
4.The user (consumer or producer) is more powerful than the means (media and
information).
5. People are no longer mere consumers of the media and other information sources
but are now producers as well.
What’s In
As a citizen, not merely of your country but the rest of the world, media and
information are undeniably important. This is because media and information equip
you with the necessary skills to become more functional and participative in the affairs
of your society. When you are exposed to media and utilize it more effectively and
efficiently, you have enormous access to information that you can use and share.
Media and communication technology are all tools at your disposal, but one thing that
will separate you from other potential users of this technology is you being a media
and information literate individual.
In the previous modules, you have been led to a path toward greater awareness
and appreciation of media and information literacy by introducing to you essential
concepts of media and information literacy. Halfway through your journey to becoming
a media and information literate individual, you have been presented with the available
tools and techniques in acquiring media messages as well as managing these
messages as information that may be utilized ethically and legally. Like every
resource, there are challenges as well as opportunities presented to you in your daily
dealing with media and information.
OPPORTUNITIES CHALLENGES
Example:
faster communication via instant fake news on social media
messaging applications such as
Messenger, What’s up, etc.
What is It
For many years, the invention of media changes the way people live. It
influences people when it comes to lifestyle, philosophical, psychological, and
emotional as well. Nowadays, we cannot deny that media has the power to change
and manipulate things. Virtually every day since early childhood, it has been playing
an important role in forming our personality, enriching our background knowledge,
providing us with information of any kind.
Ratings
It is a colloquial term for audience measurement that influence timing,
placements, and markets for media content and advertising. (Balnaves, O’Regan, &
Goldsmith, 2011) Ratings determine the number of people who watches, listens to or
reads a particular content.
Revenues
The business dictionary defines revenue as income generated from the sale of
goods or services, or any other use of capital or assets, associated with the main
operations of an organization before any costs or expenses are deducted.

The Opportunity
Among the first to realize the possible positive applications of the media and
society’s co-dependent relationships were Daniel Lerner and Wilbur Schramm. In their
perspective works, The Passing of Traditional Society (1958) and Mass Media and
National Development (1964) served as the founding texts of development
communication according to University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). Development
communication uses communication to aid in the development of society. One
practical application of this is community-based media programs. Through information
dissemination, promotion of development advocacies, and providing a medium for
The Challenge
Media and information have the power to sway society’s beliefs and perception.
People have the tendency to receive data from the media and accept it as fact right
away without conducting due diligence.
