MEng 4271- Turbomachinery I Exercise No. 3

1. Water enters an inward-flow type turbine at angle of 220 to the tangent to the outer rim of its runner
and leaves it radially. The inner and outer diameters of the runner are 30 cm and 60 cm respectively.
The width at the inlet is 15 cm. The speed of the runner is 300 rpm. The velocity of the flow in the
vane channel is constant at 4 m/s. Assuming that the flow in the runner is vane congruent, estimate:
a) The inlet blade angle β3 and outlet blade angle β0
b) The power developed by the runner
c) Draw, to scale, the velocity triangles at point 3 and 0 of the runner

2. An inward flow turbine has a wheel 60 cm in diameter and 5 cm in width at the outer rim. The inner
diameter is 0.65 times the outer diameter. The blade angles at points 3 and 0 are respectively, 750 and
140. The velocity of flow is uniform throughout the wheel and is radial at the outlet. The turbine head
is 55m. Though it is known that 8 % of the circumferential area of the runner is blocked by the blade
thickness, assume the flow to be vane congruent and estimate:
a) The speed of the runner and,
b) The power developed by the runner
c) Draw, to scale, the velocity triangles at points 3 and of the runner.

3. The design point had and flow rate of a centrifugal pump are, respectively, 29 m and 180 lit/min. The
outer diameter of its impeller is 50 cm. The blades (are curved backward and) make an angle of 300
with the tangent at the outlet tip. The radial component of the flow velocity at the exit point 3 is
3m/s. The flow enters the vane channel with no whirl. Assuming that the machine is loss-fee,
estimate:
a) The rotor speed and,
b) The blade width at the exit of the impeller,
c) Draw, to scale, the velocity triangle at point 3.

4. The outer diameter and blade width at the exit of the impeller of a centrifugal pump are, respectively,
40 cm and 2.5 cm. Its design-point speed and head are 1250 rpm and 49.5 m, respectively. The blade
angle at point 3 is 300. The flow enters the vane channel radially. Assuming ideal conditions,
estimate:
a) The power needed to drive the pump and
b) The flow rate in L/s.

5. Show, assuming vane congruent flow and no whirl at entry point, that the rise in pressure head of the
medium in the impeller of a centrifugal pumping machine is given by:
( )
H blade = C 02 + U 22 − C 32m cos ec 2 β 3 2 g
