Architectual movement which made its
appearance during the Renaissance in Italy.

Grew its popularity between the years 1715


and 1760.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
- Palladian designs usually feature pediments, columns,
symmetrical facades, proportion and order.
- Inspired by the classical architecture of Greece and Rome.

seen in the design aspect of many modern buildings.

DRESS AND CLOTHING

• Characterized by volume - dome shaped


panniers, deep sleeve cuffs, side pleats
• The dominant everyday gown was called
robe volante or robe battant
• Most common fabric is silk, but cotton is
favoured for the summer months
• Men wore three piece skirts and full skirt
coats
• Floral woven and embroidered designs

• Shift - close to skin, linen
• Stockings - wool, cotton or silk; decorated at the knee
• Ribbon garters - tied just above the knee
• Dickey Petticoat – knee-length white linen, for warmth and modesty
• Stays (corset) - layers of linen boned with strips of baleen, some plain some decorative silk
• Pocket bags - tied on waist, plain or decorative
• Paniers/Hip pads - padded with wool or cork; emphasize small waist
• Full length linen petticoat (at least one) - extra quilted petticoat for winter
• Kerchief - linen or silk, day wear
• Stomacher – decorative panel of fabric; matching or highly decorative
• Gown petticoat - silk or linen, matching or contrasting
• Gown - pinned into place down sides, ribbons tied together to raise skirts
• Day caps - all classes, practical or decorative
• Muslin apron – decorative silk or embroidered, indicates fine status
