¿What is emotional intelligence?
The term emotional intelligence was coined in 1990 by
Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, two professors of
psychology. They defined it as "the ability to control one's
own and others' feelings and emotions, to differentiate
between them, and to use this information to guide
thought and actions."

Emotional intelligence is a set of personality traits, listening skills,

and communication techniques that strengthen relationships,
both professional and personal.

SELF-AWARENESS
People with emotional intelligence often analyze
their own thoughts and feelings to stay in tune with
what's going on below the surface. By being aware
of and distinguishing their negative emotions, they
ensure they are not caught off guard by their
emotions, which could spark an argument,
undermine professional relationships, or turn a
problem into a crisis. This awareness puts them “in
the lead” to identify and control their responses.
SELF-REGULATION
One of the cornerstones of emotional
intelligence is the ability to mentally shift when
negative emotions start to cloud judgment.
However, without emotional intelligence training,
exercising self-control is easier said than done.
Regulating one's emotions and behavior in the
moment can seem like a difficult task. The
solution is in emotional intelligence training that
helps create new thought patterns and more
resourceful ways of responding to conflicts.
SOCIAL CONSCIENCE
Being able to respond to nonverbal cues and
other subtle forms of communication is one
of the hallmarks of effective leaders. This
ability plays an important role in building
relationships and gaining support and
cooperation. Staff members with “people
skills” are adept at building alliances,
establishing beneficial professional
contacts, and cultivating an atmosphere of
trust and mutual respect.
RELATIONSHIP
MANAGEMENTN
The quality of workplace relationships affects
everything from productivity and customer
satisfaction to employee retention and company
culture. Prioritizing work relationships and taking
steps to maintain them lays the foundation for
greater collaboration and team synergy.
EMPATHY
Empathy is the foundation of emotional
intelligence and consists of trying to
understand the behavior and feelings of
another person. The expression “putting
oneself in another's place” is often used to
illustrate empathy. Emotional intelligence
classes, sometimes called E.C. training, are
the most direct way for staff and managers
to get into the habit of seeing situations from
other people's perspectives.
Why is it so important to develop emotional
intelligence?
It is important that we learn to use it in our
daily lives because it is a protective factor
against any psychological discomfort that we
may have. In addition, it also helps protect us
from different types of mental disorders.
