CONDITIONALS

Zdania warunkowe we wszystkich okresach najczęściej zaczynają się od słów typu if

(jeśli), if not= unless
Np. - Jeżeli zdasz egzamin, będę najszczęśliwszym człowiekiem na ziemi.
Zwróćmy uwagę na podział na dwa człony zdania, które oddziela przecinek. W pierwszej
części widzimy postawiony warunek – Jeżeli zdasz egzamin, natomiast po przecinku
następuje skutek (będę najszczęśliwszym człowiekiem na ziemi)
Co ważne, człony zdania możemy zamienić miejscami – zdanie to będzie miało takie
samo znaczenie
Będę najszczęśliwszym człowiekiem na ziemi (skutek), jeżeli zdasz egzamin (warunek)

0 (zerowy) okres warunkowy – zero conditional

Zerowy okres warunkowy (zero conditional) służy do określania sytuacji stałych,
niezmiennych, praw natury, oraz ogólnych faktów.
If you heat water, it boils. - Jeżeli podgrzejesz wodę, zaczyna wrzeć.
If + Present Simple + Present Simple
If you don't eat over a longer period of time, you are hungry. - Jeżeli nie jesz przez
dłuższy czas, jesteś głodny.
If you work hard, you are tired. - Jeżeli ciężko pracujesz, jesteś zmęczony).

1 (pierwszy) okres warunkowy – first conditional

Pierwszy okres warunkowy (first conditional) posłuży nam do opisu sytuacji, które mogą,
lecz nie muszą mieć miejsca w niedalekiej przyszłości, lub teraźniejszości. W tym
przypadku istnieje jednak duże prawdopodobieństwo, iż postawiony warunek zostanie
spełniony.
If you give me a call, I will answer it. - Jeżeli do mnie zadzwonisz, odbiorę.
If + Present Simple + Future Simple
If you do it, I will appreciate it. - Jeżeli to zrobisz, docenię to.
You will get a reward if you finish first. - Dostaniesz nagrodę, jeżeli skończysz pierwszy.
If you do not call me, I will be upset. - Jeżeli do mnie nie zadzwonisz, będę smutna.
Unless you call me, I will be upset. - Jeżeli do mnie nie zadzwonisz, będę smutna.

2 (drugi) okres warunkowy – second conditional

Drugi okres warunkowy (second conditional) jest konstrukcją, którą użyjemy do
spekulacji – odnosi się on do teraźniejszości oraz przyszłości, jednak sytuacje, o których
wspominamy, prawie na pewno nie będą miały miejsca. W języku polskim zdania takie
nazwiemy potocznie „gdybaniem”.
If I had all the money in the world, I would buy an island. - Gdybym miał wszystkie
pieniądze tego świata, kupiłbym wyspę.
If + Past Simple + would z podstawową formą czasownika
If I got rich, I would buy a Porsche. - Jeżeli stałbym się bogaty, kupiłbym samochód
marki Porsche.
If I were you, I wouldn't do that. - Na twoim miejscu nie zrobiłbym tego.
What would you do if you found a bag on the street? - Co byś zrobił, jeżeli znalazłbyś
torbę na ulicy?
po If I następuje słowo were, zamiast was. Jest to konstrukcja charakterystyczna dla
gdybania „co by było, gdybym był/a tobą”, oraz, co za tym idzie, odnoszenia się do
sytuacji nierealnych. Gramatycznie poprawne byłoby użycie If I was you, które to
wyrażenie może być użyte, jednak utartym zwrotem w takiej sytuacji będzie If I were
you (gdybym był tobą/na twoim miejscu).

3 (trzeci) okres warunkowy – third conditional

Trzeci okres warunkowy służy do spekulacji na temat przeszłości – sytuacji, które już się
wydarzyły, i których nie możemy zmienić. Jest to więc czyste gdybanie „co by było, jeżeli
coś by się wydarzyło/nie wydarzyło”.
If + Past Perfect + would have z trzecią formą czasownika
If I had eaten less, my stomach would not have hurt me. - Gdybym zjadł mniej, nie
bolałby mnie brzuch.
If you had not hurried, you wouldn't have done such a silly thing. - Jeżeli byś się tak nie
spieszyła, nie zrobiłabyś takiej głupoty.
if I had met her, I would have told her that. - Gdybym ją spotkał, powiedziałbym jej o
tym,
