ASSIGNMENT 2

1. Briefly discuss the basic components of a microwave link.

The basic components of a microwave link are:

 Signal Interface/Processing Module, is a component block which is usually

not dependent on the carrier frequency and also known as baseband IF
section.
 Radio Frequency Transmitter-Receiver Module, these modules convert the
signal which contains all the information to be sent. These sections also down
converts the received microwave signal and convert it into a lower frequency
receive IF.
 Waveguide-antenna Assembly is the passive part of a microwave link. This
assembly begin with the antenna duplexer on the RF module and ends with
the antenna.

2. Briefly discuss various components in the Interface/Processing Module.

Signal interface/processing module or known as baseband IF section. It

has two main parameters: the amount of traffic or tributary which it carries and
the type of modulation for the IF. Signal Interface/Processing Module has
indicator lights that can be classified according to their function: signal
monitoring, system monitoring, internal testing and system configuration. In terms
of the connectors, it may be placed at rear or for convenience to the installation,
also at the front.

3. Briefly discuss various components in the RF Module.

These components facilitate the process of frequency conversion, signal
modulation, amplification, and filtering within radio frequency systems. The RF
Module comprises many components, including:
 RF amplifiers which it helps to compensate for signal losses and ensure
a strong and reliable signal
 Frequency mixer used to convert the frequency of RF signals
 Filters used to select or reject specific frequencies from an RF signal,
 Modulators/demodulators the modulator converts baseband signal into
RF signals suitable for transmission, while demodulator recovering the
original signal from the carrier
 Oscillators used in frequency synthesis and tuning applications.
4. Briefly discuss various components in the waveguide – Antenna Assembly.

The waveguide-antenna assembly consists of a waveguide, which is used

to channel electromagnetic waves, and an antenna, which is responsible for the
emission or reception of these waves. In order to optimize the connection,
control, and management of electromagnetic signals, several components such
as:

 Feedhorns is used to couple energy between the waveguide and the

antenna, maximizing energy transfer and minimizing losses.
 Connectors used to join different sections of the waveguide and to others
components, to prevent leakage and maintain signal integrity.
 Transitions ensure that the electromagnetic waves can propagate smoothly
without significant reflections and losses.
 Polarizers and filters this is used to allow specific frequency to pass while
attenuating others and can also include to select or modify the state of the
waves
