for the dusting of cleaned surfaces. The pressure and the volume of compressed air supply for blast
cleaning shall meet the work requirements.
 No acid washes or other cleaning solutions or solvents shall be used on metal surfaces after they have
been blasted. This includes inhibitive washes intended to prevent rusting.
 Surface preparation shall result clean surface compatible to at least SA 2 ½ per Swedish standard
055900, unless otherwise specified.
 Chipping, scraping and steel wire brushing using manual or power driven tools can not remove firmly
adherent mill scale and shall only be used where blast cleaning is impractical, with the approved of
owner and in accordance with the grade CST2/ST3 as specified.
6. PRIMING
 Prepared surface should be primed generally within four hours. Cleaned surfaces shall never be left
overnight painted. For coating in such case re-blasting or re-cleaning is necessary.
 In order to minimize contamination between successive coats of paint, over coating of the preceding
coat shall be done as soon as it is permitted by the particular specification, and not delayed beyond the
period specified. When delays are unavoidable, the painted surface shall be thoroughly cleaned and
dried to the satisfaction of owner before over coating may take place.
 Any primed surface which has been exposed for more than a few days will have become
contaminated and should be cleaned down with fresh water and allowed to dry before over coating.
 Primed and painted surface which have been exposed to marine conditions will be contaminated with
salt and should be lightly wire brushed, then washed with fresh water before over coating.
 Although zinc rich primer is very effective in preventing rusting, extended exposure develops a
surface contaminated of zinc corrosion products which impairs the adhesion of subsequent coats. Zinc
rich primers, both organic and inorganic which have been exposed long enough to develop white
surface staining should be prepared for over coating by one of the following methods:
 Light blast cleaning and dust removal.
 Wire brushing, followed by water washing.
 Scrubbing with fresh water, using bristle brushes.
7. PAINTING
 All painting shall be carried out in conformity with this specification and with the paint
manufacturer's recommendation. Paint application shall also follow the procedures covered SSPC-
PA1 "Shop field and maintenance painting".
 Hand mixing of paints shall only be permitted for containers up to 5 litters. All larger containers shall
be mixed by mechanical agitators and brought to a uniform consistency. Where pigment separation
readily occurs, provision shall be discarded irrespective of its apparent condition.
 Two-pack paints shall be mixed in strict accordance with manufacturer's instructions. The pot life of
such paints shall be specifically noted and any mixed paint which has exceeded is pot life shall be

discarded irrespective of its apparent condition.
 Contractor shall avoid contamination of any adjacent items of plant and equipment by paint over
spray, drips or spillage, providing appropriate protection where necessary. Stainless steel and high
nickel-chromium alloy surfaces shall be protected against over spray or paint drips, particularly those
containing metallic pigments. If any such contamination does occur, the paint shall be immediately
and thoroughly removed by contractor.
 Painting shall not take place under adverse weather conditions, in particular rain, fog, snow or when
such conditions are likely to occur before the paint has become dry. Painting shall not take place in
the following conditions:
 At temperatures below 5˚C (41°F)
 When the relative humidity is greater than 80%
 When the metal surface temperature is less than 3°C (5.4°F) above the ambient dew point.
 In the case of exterior locations, painting may also be suspended due to wind speed at the discretion
of owner. In cases where moisture tolerant coatings are used, painting may proceed on damp surfaces
within the limits recommended by the manufacturer of the particular coating being applied.
 The method of application shall be selected to ensure that the paint is applied in a uniform manner to
the prescribed film thickness without any runs, sag or other blemishes. The pressure and volume of
the compressed air used for spray application shall meet the work requirement and be free from oil
and water contamination. Traps, separators and filters shall be emptied and cleaned regularly.
Application of primers on wire brushed surfaces shall be by brush.
 To ensure that the minimum thickness is achieved on all angles, corners, bulkheads, welds, etc. such
edges shall be stripe painted separately before applying the main system. Holding primers shall only
be permitted where they are obtained from the same manufacturing source as the main priming, coats,
and where the manufacturer is able to provide a full guarantee that satisfactory intercoat adhesion will
occur.
 Where further painting is to be carried out, zinc silicate primers shall be sealed with a tie coat as soon
as practical after complete curing has taken place, to avoid salt or chemical contamination and to seal
the porous nature of the primer. The tie coat shall be selected to ensure sound adhesion to the zinc
silicate primer and be compatible with the finishing coat process. When over coating with aluminum
silicon paint is designed, a tie coat is not necessary. Over coating and dry spray of inorganic zinc
silicate primers shall be removed prior to application of subsequent tie coats or top coats.
 In all instances where two or more coats of the same paint are specifies such coatings shall be of
contrasting colors so each stage of the work can be readily identified and film thicknesses determined
accordingly. This also applies to the surface prepared and the color of the first primer coat.
 Intervals between coats shall comply with manufacture’s recommendations and should generally be
kept to the absolute minimum in order to prevent contamination between coats. Where contamination
occurs between coats, this shall be completely removed, generally by washing with a suitable
detergent solution and rinsing with dean fresh water.

 All points of damage to paint work incurred at any stage of the work, including shop welding
operations shall be re-prepared by blast cleaning to the original standard and recoating with the
specified priming coat to restore the film thickness. In all such instances preparation shall extend 25
mm into the sound paint work and a further 25 mm of sound paint work shall be lightly blasted to etch
the surface. Repainting shall then over prepared surface and the etched paint work. Where blast
cleaning can not be carried out, surface preparation of points of damage by scraping and power wire
brushing is acceptable provided specific approved is given by Eng. In such instances, modification of
the originally specified primer may be necessary to suit the changed method of surface protection.
 Preparation of weld margins shall be preceded by the removal of masking taps where fitted and shall
involve the removal of all flux, welding spatter and other foreign matter as described in section 4 of
SSPC-SP-COM. Where blast cleaning is used, this may be by means of portable vacuum blast
apparatus. Where power wire brushing is used, excessive cleaning to the extent this is liable to
produce a polished surface shall be avoided.
 Shop contact surfaces of steel structures having normally bolted joints, shall be painted by coat of
primer, tie coated and brought together while the paint is wet.
 Where touching up prior to top coating of zinc based primers involved, this shall be preceded by
thorough cleaning with solvent or an emulsion type cleaner to remove all oil and grease. This shall be
followed by thoroughly hosing down with clean potable water which in the case of surfaces that have
not been tie coated shall be carried out in conjunction with manual scrubbing with stiff brushes in
order to remove all surface dirt and other contaminants, zinc corrosion products (white rust), etc.
 Where touch up of a shop applied inorganic zinc silicate primer is involved, the type of paint
employed for touch up shall be two pack zinc rich polyamide cured epoxy primer for temperatures up
to 150°C and ethyl silicate based inorganic zinc primer for temperatures in excess of 150°C.
 All beveled ends of equipment's nozzles shall be coated by weldable rust inhibitor to provide rust and
corrosion protection at joints prior to welding,
8. GALVANIZING
 Hot-dip galvanizing shall be in accordance with ASTM A123 or A153, as applicable.
 Nuts, bolts and washers may be either hot-dip galvanized or mechanically galvanized in accordance
with ASTM B695, class50 or higher.
 Recommendation in ASTM A385 shall be considered when designing fabricated, structural steel
items which will be hot dip galvanized.
 All members and assemblies warped during galvanizing shall be straightened in the shop.
 For touch up of galvanized steelwork structures, a. single pack zinc rich epoxy primer shall be used,
employing two brush coats each at 75 microns dried film thickness in order to provide a weight of
zinc approximately equivalent to that as deposited on adjacent galvanized surface. Application shall
lap over for a distance of 50 mm at each side of the weld or around the perimeter of the damaged area.
 Where requiring painting, new galvanized surface shall be thoroughly degreased with white spirit or
emulsifying agents and chemically etched either by a proprietary pretreatment solution, or using a

The preparation of the surfaces has to comply with the SSPC and with ISO 8501-1-1988 standards, according to
the cleaning grade defined by the present specification. Particular care has to be put while cleaning the welded
seams and the areas around them. All the welding residuals and the pearls have to be removed, while crests and
peaks have to be smoothed.
If weldings have to be done on the primer-coated parts, the primer coat has to be removed for 5 cm around the
edges to be welded.
The welded seams and the areas around them has to be duly cleaned by means of mechanical devices.
It is not allow removing the paint by means of any kind of paint removing products. The operations for the
surface preparation have to be programmed in order to avoid that dangerous dust quantities and other pollution
substances fall on surfaces already prepared or painted and still not dry.
Oil, grease, dust, earth as well as any polluting substance settling on the surfaces after their preparation, has to be
completely removed before the painting.
Should a degradation of the prescribed surface preparation standard happen, said areas have to be cleaned again
as above described.

3.3.1 Preliminary cleaning of the unpainted surfaces

Before starting with the surface preparation, they have to be cleaned by means of water.

3.3.2 Cleaning by means of thinner of the unpainted surfaces

This cleaning method has to be used, if necessary, before sandblasting. This method allows the remove of oil,
grease and any other similar polluting substance by the SSPC-SP 1 standard.

3.3.3 Cleaning of the already painted surfaces

Before applying the paint, the already painted surfaces have to be duly cleaned from any trace of dust, salt, earth
or grease.
After a sea transport or after a long stay near the sea, the surfaces to be painted have to be washed with water or
with a sponge, if the machinery is not watertight, in order to remove any trace of salt and then they have to be
dried with warm air and clothes. The oil spots and the dust have to be completely removed by means of the
thinner indicated by the paints Supplier.

3.3.4 Sandblasting
This method consists in siliceous sandblasting or dry metallic shot.
The sandblasting has to be carried out in accordance with ISO 8501-1-1988 standard. Type and grade of
sandblasting has to be those one indicated in the following items. Relevant quantities of oil, grease and other
polluting substances have to be previously removed by cleaning with thinners, as per item 3.3.2.
The sandblasting is allowed only if the surfaces to be sandblasted have a temperature at least 3°C higher than the
condensate temperature of the atmospheric humidity. The compressed air used for the sandblasting has to be free
from water and oil. To this purpose suitable separators and filters have to be foreseen. The sandblasting operation
has to be followed by dusting with dry and clean compressed. Particular care has to be put while cleaning the
recesses of the structure, in order to eliminate, before painting, any trace of sand, shot, oil, welding pearls etc.
The structure recesses, which due to their particular configuration cannot be completely cleaned from the
residuals of the sandblasting process, have to be duly closed and protected before the sandblasting itself.

According to the Inspection and Test Plan, the Supplier has to certify the cleaning operation and the relevant
checks. The time elapsing between the sandblasting and the paintworks has to be less than 24 hours.
It is necessary to avoid absolutely that the sandblasted surfaces were wetted or exposed in too humid rooms or
soiled with grease. On the contrary, repeat the sandblasting process. Before the sandblasting, all the threaded
parts have to be protected with suitable sleeves or plugs, while all the other parts, which could be damaged, have
to be protected with cardboard or wooden plates.

3.3.5 Zinc-coating
The electrogalvanic protection by means of zinc coating has to be carried out in accordance with the standards
F4203 “Electrogalvanic finishing. General prospect” and F4231 “Surface treatment of metallic materials. Zinc-
coating on ferrous materials”. The coating have to be “heavy” type, suitable for outdoor installation, in
industrial, sea and tropical environment, with minimum coating thickness of 50 μm. In no point of the treated
area, the coating thickness has to be less than the minimum prescribed value. After the zinc coating, the protected
surfaces have to undergo to one of following posttreatment:
- coating with nitric polishing, with subsequent application of mineral oils, wax, silicon, in order to
keep the surface polish and to avoid the creation of “white rust”;
- coating with chromic polishing treatment;
- coating with chrome treatment.

3.4 PAINTWORK
The paintwork can be done by brush, by spray with or without air or by matching these methods together, in any
case always according to the instructions of the paint Supplier. The paintwork has to be carried out by skilled
personnel. The thickness of the different paint coats has to be uniform and the painted surface has to be free from
brush signs, sagging, irregularities or any other defect. Surfaces with evident traces will be rejected. The polished
or the machined surfaces, the instruments boards, the valves stems, the threading, the motor and the pump shafts
and all the other movable parts, the sealing, the identification plates and the glass parts have to be protected with
adhesive tape or similar means.
If weldings have to be done on the painted parts, the paint has to be removed for 5 cm around the edges to be
welded. These areas have to be protected by taping. At the end of the paintwork, al the protections listed above
have to be removed. All the paints lying on said parts have to be removed. During the paintwork, take care of
angles, slots and areas difficult to be reached. When the paintworks happen at the same time of other operations,
carry out all the expedients necessary to avoid the paints still not dried to be polluted by dust.

3.4.1 Atmospheric conditions

The paints have not to be laid on under atmospheric conditions favoring the condensation rather than the
evaporation of the humidity from the surfaces to be painted. Humidity traces have to evaporate from the surface
within 5 minutes. The painting has not to be carried out if the relative humidity of the air is higher than 85%,
unless it is allowed by the paint Supplier.
While paintwork, the temperature of the surface to be painted has to be at least 2°C higher than the dew point.

When the temperature is lower than 5°C or higher than 45°C, the paintwork has to be approved by the paint
Supplier.
The paintwork has not to be done with dust presence. If working outdoor, the paintwork has not to be carried out
under rain, snow, fog, mist or if said events could happen within a short time. Before paintwork, both the paint
and the surface to be painted must have a homogeneous temperature.

3.4.2 Priming on rough surfaces

The primer has to be laid on within 24 hours after sandblasting or any other prescribed treatment has prepared the
surface. The priming has to be done before the prescribed cleanliness standard can change. On the contrary, act
as indicated in item 3.3. The pickled surfaces, before priming, have to be grind in order to obtain the minimum
roughness grade necessary to a correct anchoring of the paint, according to the instructions of the paint Supplier.
The zinc-coated surfaces, before priming, have to be degreased with thinner having emulsifying characteristics
and, eventually, they have to be grind, in order to obtain the instructions of the paint Supplier.

3.4.3 Paintwork of the subsequent coats

Before the paintwork of the subsequent coats, the previous one has to be completely dried or hardened,
respecting the minimum time for the new paintwork prescribed by the Supplier. After this minimum interval, the
new paintwork has to be carried out within 24 hours. Before proceeding with the subsequent paintworks, the
surfaces to be painted have to be deeply cleaned from dust or grease traces, mainly when the paintworks happen
at the same time of other site works. Before proceeding with each paintwork, any possible damage of the paint
already laid on has to be repaired, using the same paint laid on before. Therefore, after the above described
cleaning and degrease operations, the damaged surface has to be glass-papered with fine glass paper and laid on
it the paint coat necessary to have the damaged surface in the whole conditions. Respect the thickness, the drying
time and the correct dilution also for the retouch.

3.4.4 Paintwork of the first finishing

The paintwork of the first finishing has to be laid on within 24 hours after the surface preparation, as listed in
item 3.3.3. In any case, the minimum time for the new painting has to be respected. However, the paintwork of
the first coat has to be done before the prescribed cleanliness standard changes. On the contrary, proceed as
specified in item 3.3.

3.4.5 Retouch
If the surfaces show abrasions due to the transport and assembly operations, it is necessary to carry out the duly
retouches, before proceeding with the subsequent paintworks. Therefore, after preparing the surfaces as
indicated in item 3.3, the damaged surface has to be glass-papered with fine glass paper and the dust has to be
removed with brushes or clean compressed air jets. Now it is possible to lay on it the paint coat necessary to
have the damaged surface in the whole conditions. Are rust traces present on the surface, they have to be
removed by brushing with metallic brushes. Respect the prescribed drying time, dilution and dry film thickness
also for the retouches. During this operation, take care not to damage the intact painted parts. Should the
defective or damaged areas be more than 30% of the total painted surface, normally the protective coat has to be
completely removed and it is necessary to proceed Purchaser.

3.4.6 Thickness of the paints

The minimum thickness of the each paintwork dry film is shown in item 9. In no area the thickness has to be
lower than the prescribed one. Should some areas not reach the minimum prescribed thickness, carry out further
paintwork on them. The paint thickness has not to be higher than the prescribed minimum one, in order to avoid
any defect on the aspect and on the coverage of the protective coating.

3.5 Handling Of The Painted Parts

The painted components have not to be handled or delivered, until the paint is deeply dried, according to the
Supplier’s times.

3.6 Checks
When the surfaces to be painted have welding seams, before painting them, make sure the checks foreseen for the
welds have been carried out. For the checks on the paints, please refer to item 12.

4. MACHINED SURFACES
All the machined surfaces are protected by means of temporary protections, according to the relevant materials
lists.

2-Controlling of the color by reference color for prevention of sallowest the color because of furnace
high temperature.
3-Controlling the color thickness by a caliper for 3 point average of least 60-110 micron condition
that non of the points thickness should not be lesser than 50 micron, it's good to note that, the
maximum thickness can be greater than this number according to the painting supervisor or quality
control inspector opinion.
4-Controlling for any deficiency
5-Controlling the color cohesion by doing the coherency test in a sample according to the following
procedure:
-Select a part by 15*20 Cm size and 0.6 millimeter thickness from metal sheet and perform the rinsing
and coloring procedure, regular scratch in 1×1 millimeter distances(square or rhombic) by special
cutter on the sample surface.
-Stick a special banderole on the scratched surface and the unstuck the sample part.
-If no color pieces stick to the banderole the color coherency test is approved otherwise it is rejected.
6-Controling the impact by performing the stroke test on the sample according to the following
procedure:
-Select a part by 15*20Cm size and 0.6 millimeter thickness from metal sheet and perform the rising
and coloring procedure.
-Place the sample part in a stroke test machine in the way that machine sinker(2 pounds
sinker)descend directly from at least 30 inches on it's surface.

-Bring out the parts from the machine after descending the sinker.
-Approve the sample if the stroke doesn't make any crack on the part's color.
-Archive the test sample according to the month for once year and after the extinct them.
7- Stick approval label on the approved part write the coloring date and furnace number on this label.

3.3 POWER COLOR CHANGING METHOD FROM SPRAY SYSTEM

3.3.1 FOR PERFORMING THE JOB FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD FOLLOWED CAREFULLY
-First start the color cabin until all discharging the color from filters , then open the filters and wind
them.
-Discharge the color tank of spray system and wind it.
-Open the spray system gun and clean accessible parts and wind the related pipe to gun.
-Shave the colored stick to the cabinet's walls and then wind whole of it.
-Discharge the color bucket under the color cabin and wind it.
-After all assemble the filters again, now the spray system is ready to work.

3.4 PAINTING AND COLOR CONTROLLING FOR COPPER RACKS

3.4.1 RACKS PAINTING METHOD

-Fold the section which shouldn't color.
-Rinse by a degreasing cloth.
-Final color spray ( dry air Alkid )

3.4.2RACKS COLOR CONTROL METHOD

1- Controlling the surface color (inexistence of scratches and any other directs on the colored surface
of parts).
2- Controling inexistence of any droplet.
3-Controling inexistence of any defects
