1.0 INTRODUCTION
Tech Test Nigeria Limited an indigenous company has been contracted by Zaragozatech
Contruction Nigeria Limited to carry out a Static Pile Load Test on a selected pile at
proposed Ten Storeys Building Hotel at Aba Port Harcourt Owerri Road, Aba, Abia State.
The selected pile for the Static Pile Load Test was 600mm in diameter bored piles
installed at a depth of 20 meters acting mainly in end bearing with designated Safe
Working Load (SWL) of 1500KN with and Ultimate Load of 2250KN.
Report contained herein presents the results of the Static load test carried out on the
selected Pile.
The objectives of the load test on this working pile is to verify the design assumptions
for the pile capacity by proofing that the actual safe working load can be adopted and
also to determine the settlement at the safe working load (SWL). Also, to check the
ultimate load which is specified to be 1.5 Times the designed safe working loads (UL).
The pile was scheduled to be tested in two cycles.
2.0 PILE LOAD TEST INFORMATION

 Pile Type: Cast in place, Date of Casting:
 Method of Boring: Auguring bucket excavation
 Soil Type: Clayey soil with traces of silt in some tin layer (Lateritic Material)
 Design load (Safe Working Load): 1500KN
 Ultimate load (Maximum Applied Load): 2250KN
 Testing Standard: IS-2911 (IV), ASTM D1143, BS 8004. 1986
3.0 EQUIPMENT
The following equipment was mobilized for the pile load test
1. 1No. ENERPAC jack of 3000 Tons capacity.
2. Enerpac Hydraulic Pump with pressure gauge of 10000Bar
3. 2Nos. strain gauges for recording settlement (Ele UK)
4. A horizontal bar as reference Beam (to serve as reaction for the strain gauges)
5. A digital timer for recording time
4.0 SCOPE OF WORK:

The scope of this work are as follows,
 Setup details for carrying out pile load test: these include the following:
o Material and equipment required for the test
o Placement of loading platform
o Installation of reference beam
o Leveling and placing of plate, hydraulic jack, dial Gauge and pressure gauge
o Ensuring safety provision
 Recording of time, load and settlement data
 Preparing and submission of report that will include the following’
o Preparation of related graph
o Analyzing of recorded data
o Interpretation of results
5.0 LIMITATION: The Test was carried out in accordance with the accepted pile load test
Standards Practice. The recommendation and conclusion reach in this report are based
on the data obtained from the pile load test carried out at Pile No: 37 not carried out.
6.0 PROCEDURES
The above equipment was assembled in accordance with the standard specified in the
BS 8004. 1986 for the maintained load test. The test procedure was generally in
accordance with the guidelines contained in the BS 8004. 1986 section 7.5 and ASTM
D1143 – 81 (Reapproved 1994).
7.0 TEST OPERATIONS

We mobilized to site on 18th October, 2023 to carry out the pile load test. All site
preparations were done three days prior to the test and some of this included setting
of the beams on the pile and the plate to carry the static load. The testing on the Pile
commenced on 21st October, 2023 at 01:53pm and was concluded on 22nd October,
2023.
The Safe Working Load (i.e. SWL of 1500KN) was attained at 3:24pm on 21nd
October, 2023 and maintained for 6hours, whilst the Ultimate Working Load (i.e. UWL
2250KN) was successfully achieved at 2:24am on 22nd October, 2023.
The load was maintained at this level for 6 hours, after which offloading to zero and
final readings were obtained at about 10:24am on 22nd October 2023.
Note: After achieving the Ultimate Working load which is 1.5% the self-working Load,
the contractor suggested that the load be increased to 2.0% the SWL which amounted
to the UWL of 3000KN.
The pictures of the operations are presented in the Site pictures in Appendix B. While
summary of the results is presented below in section 5. The loading sequence is
however also presented in Appendix A.
8.0 SUMMARY OF RESULTS
The results obtained are summarized in the table below.

The results obtained in the field were recorded on the field logs and used for the
analysis of load/settlement behavior which is presented Appendix A for both cycles.
9.0 ANALYSIS OF RESULTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
The results reveal that at 100% SWL ( i.e. 1500KN) maximum settlement in
compression recorded after 6hours was 17.692mm and at the end of 6hours of
sustaining the ultimate load of 2250KN (150% SWL) the maximum settlement
recorded in compression was 16.905mm.
The order of settlement for these pile when compared with the values regarded as
maximum beyond which a pile is considered to have failed under the applied load (i.e.
A settlement equivalent to 10% of the nominal shaft/ diameter 600mm in this case).
In view of the above analysis, Safe Working load of 1500KN adopted for the tested
pile can be safely supported by the tested pile and similar piles installed on this site
within permissible settlement limit and with adequate factor of Safety.
Above recommendation is borne purely on the results of the 37No. Pile load test
carried out on a working pile installed on this site and can be applied solely to the
tested pile. The results show clearly that at the designed safe working load (SWL),
total settlement is negligible and tolerable.
