Explore the Creative Pathways website CAREERS PAGE and list one career in EACH
of the four areas that you might be suited for (now or in the future). The four areas are
listed on the left side of the CAREERS page:

1. Above the Line

Career: Director

To break through the field I can:

1. Join the union for directors such as DGC (Directors Guild of Canada) which
covers the areas of direction, design, production and editing. As a member of the
union, they can provide the training and development mechanisms. It also
supports members’ employment opportunities as well as giving the immediate
work environments and future concerns of directing.
2. Get an entry-level job of directing such as an intern assistant director first and
accumulate more experiences in film or television. It can also give the training of
how to have a good relationship with actors, strong leadership and be
imaginative, etc.

2. Below the Line

Career: Editor

To break through the field I can:


1. Get an entry-level job such as 2nd Assistant Editor.
2. Before becoming a professional film editor, I can start training myself to have
good visual storytelling skills, as well as the techniques of editing and knowing
how the post production processes go.

3. Animation, VFX, Post Production

Career: Sound Effects Editor

To break through the field I can:

1. Start from an entry-level job such as Sound Assistant and gain more working
experience on sound editing software. It may take years to get to a more
advanced position.
2. Join the union IATSE 891. It will provide the membership subsidized skills and
safety training.

4. Film Adjacent

Career: Service and Supply - casting director

To break through the field I can:

1. Train myself with expert knowledge of the specific field: casting field and learn
how to contact actors. I also have the skills to communicate with the producers
and directors to know what kind of actors they are looking for. I also have to be
aware of the art of acting.
2. Start with the entry-level job: casting assistant, which can help me know better
interpersonal and communication skills.
