Task Two – Job Roles, Freelance Work SKETCH UP

I am most interested in the Film and TV drama. I am unsure on what I want to do fully but I
have knocked down some that I may enjoy. Also looking into Visual effects (VFX) would be
another route for me.

1) Assistant Director – Production management department. Also known as AD is the

director’s right-hand man. They tend to plan the filming schedule and work the with
the director or the director of photography. In pre-production they break down the
script, analysing it for what will be needed in terms of cast location equipment crew
etc. They tend to be Good at visualising the script and reading the script
through. They are best at knowing location cast and understand what vision the
director has. They tend to work with second assistant directors (2 nd AD), third
assistant director (3rd AD), crowd assistant directors (Crowd PA) and floor runners.

2) VFX Editor – VFX editors work as a link between the film or TV production team. They
do visual effects. They could do freelance or work within house changing their main
role. With client sided VFX Editors they tend to work on the set, whole the live action
footage is being shot. They make sure the way everything is captured is in a way that
makes it so they can edit it and do what they have to correctly. AN In-house VFX
Director tend to manage the VFX artists and VFX Studios have everything they need
to work and create. They tend to be best at organisation and communication. Also,
their editing skills must be on top as well. They tend to work mostly close towards
directors, producers and other editors to get the best results and most
communication they can get.
3) Rigging Technical director (TD) – They are set to create digital skeletons for 3D CG
models. They program the ‘rigs ‘or the puppets to move in a realistic way. They then
hand these over to animators for their basic movements. They are given a static rig
drawn by a modeller to animate and rig up. They can be hired and employed by VFX
studios or work as freelancers. They tend to be best at programming and their
coding skills. They tend to have advance knowledge of programming such as python
C++. They tend to be under the management of an VFX supervisor. They regularly
communicate with the production team, and they obviously work 3d modellers for
their main rigs.

Since the start of year 2 my chosen employment role has changed from mostly
video/photography to more VFX (visual effects) and cinema 4D as well.

FREE LANCE WORK

About freelancing
Key issues: When you finish up university you tend to come out with no job offers or no
clients and you tend to have to search for people yourselves at first and build up yourself a
name.
It can also make you feel really down, and you have to tend to dishearten yourself and suck
it up and just push through it.
Your schedule tends to not be planned whatsoever and you could be hired or left on short
notice. Also, you tend to have loads of emails that you need to go through.

A must have been connections and if you don’t have them then you could be at fault. And
tend to struggle.

One thing that wasn’t in the video that I wanted to add is that the issue with money. If
you’re freelancing in any area of media, you may struggle to hold up money as you aren’t on
a constant contract.

SKILLS SET

IT Skills -. I have improved upon a lot of the adobe software such as a After effects,
animation, photoshop and others. I have learnt how-to use them throughout year 1 and
continuing to in year 2. We have also started going into Cinema 4D and more aftereffects
meaning that I am able to learn them more in depth. I am also using Microsoft software
mostly word more now as well due to college

Technical skills – I have improved upon using the canon video cameras and photography
cameras. This is learning how to use all the possible functions and finding tips and tricks to
add onto this. Also, I can explain them to others if needed and re learn other bits I may have
forgotten about.

Interpersonal skills – I have been able to learn more knowledge throughout this course even
if it doesn’t mean that it’s to do with the work. it could come down to time management
and keeping up consistency. I am also becoming better at have initiative and keeping my
focus aimed on getting a distinction in this course for university.

Communication skills – I have always been a confident speaker, but my listening wasn’t as
good. It has improved overtime and I am able to keep my focus aimed on the person who is
speaking to me. For example, someone within class, work or outside overall. My working
with others has never been my strong suit but I have been trying to improve on it.

SCREENSKILLS LINKS

Passion - Passion is being aimed and motivated to work towards something you want to be
or want to make. I think that my passion for what I want to do is strong, but it isn’t strong
enough as I tend to lack and get undermotivated to aim towards what I want.

Financial drive – it is to aim and focused on getting a living working in the sector you would
like to be at in a job. My financial drive is to be able to work in the area of media I want to
and be able to hold up a good enough pay that I can live with what I want to focus on the
most. This could be freelancing or under a contract.
Motivational and discipline – it is being reliable and punctual. Communicating well.
Motivation is easy to loss and easy to gain with me. You need to be sorted and know what
you are doing.
Reputation – it is what people think about you or know you as. For example, being well
known in an industry for being good at a certain part of video or being a big director. Also
having your name known out as well. Reputation could be bad or good. You could be
infamous or famous. Improving upon my reputation when I move into university would be
vital and if I am to make more connections then I will move further and have more
opportunities for freelancing and work.

Flexibility - Flexibility is being able to cope with change and be ready to respond when
needed. The media industry is constantly changing and shifting and so are clients. You need
to be able to make change and bring up and make what is needed quickly or slowly and
being to work with a new client. With my flexibility it isn’t strong. Personally, it could do
with a lot of improvement, but as I get older it would improve upon naturally as when I
move into university and the media industry as a whole more, I would have to make myself
used to the fact that flexibility is the main factor.

Sector knowledge - You need a good understanding of the roles you are looking at to work
in. you need to be aware of how different content is realised and be able to explain and talk
about it. This could mean more than the storyline. For example, lighting and equipment. The
skills I currently have could do with improvement. This is because I have only learnt media
throughout college so far and pushing it further would be the best. I could do my own type
of freelancing or just building a portfolio in my own way in my spare time in my gap year and
university.

Identifying media sectors

I have two main areas I would like to develop more into freelancing would be Film and TV
drama. Also, Visual effects (VFX)

For Film and TV drama the job role I would move into is the assistant director. Im not sure
where I could find an opportunity for this now but I feel like it would come down to knowing
the right people. There may be areas where I could apply but I can’t seem to find many for
this sector.

For Visual effects (VFX). Going into freelancing would be my main opportunity. I would start
by learning VFX in general more and begin to build up a portfolio further.

If I started out with freelancing with either one of these sectors, I would most likely build a
portfolio while learning more into what I want to aim for. I would also try to find freelancing
work that would take me on. Eventually if I manage to land a contract with a company then I
would be settled. I would still continue to improve upon my portfolio as well an learn more
skills along the way
With how building up a media platform. I would obviously make a website and use it as my
main portfolio. I would also use social medias such as a Tiktok or Youtube if it is video wise.
If it’s more based on promoting myself with pictures I would most likely use twitter and
Instagram
