DETERMINATION OF ESTIMATED BIRTH DAY

EDC – estimated date of confinement

EDB – estimated date of birth

EDD – estimated date of delivery
1. NAGELE’ RULE – standard method used to predict the length of pregnancy
JANUARY – MARCH (+9 +7)
APRIL – DECEMBER (-3 +7 +1)
2. OVULATION AGE – measurement of life of fetus from the time of ovulation or
fertilization
3. GESTATION AGE (AOG) - measurement of length of pregnancy from the first day of the
last menstrual period (LMP)

ESTIMATING EXPECTED DATE OF DELIVERY NAEGEL’S RULE

PROCEDURE:
❑ Determine the last normal menstrual period (LMP)
❑ Consider first day of LMP
❑ Consider the month in numeric terms
❑ Examples:
JANUARY = 1 SEPTEMBER = 9 MARCH = 3

FOR JANUARY TO MARCH

❑ The given LMP is February 5 – 10 2021. The numerical value of February is 2.
2 5 2021
+9 +7

11 12
EDD November 12. 2021
❑ Compute for the EDD:

12 20
EDD: December 20, 2021

FOR APRIL TO DECEMBER

❑ Use numeric value

Subtract 3 months and add 7 days add 1 to the year
❑ The given LMP is JULY 12 – 17, 2021
Numeric number of JULY is 7
7 12 2021

-3 +7 +1
4 19 2022
EDD: APRIL 19. 2022
❑ Compute for the EDD:
❑ LMP is MAY 1 – 5, 2021
Numeric value of MAY is 5
5 1 2021
-3 +7 +1
2 8 2022
EDD: FEBRUARY 8, 2022

ESTIMATING GESTATIONAL AGE BASED ON LMP

PROCEDURE:

❑ Determine the LMP

❑ Determine the number of days from LMP to the day of assessment
❑ Divide the total number of days by 7

EXAMPLE:
❑ LMP: MARCH 20 –25, 2021
❑ VISIT: JULY 28, 2021

MARCH 31 – 20 = 11
MARCH 11 DAYS
APRIL 30 DAYS
MAY 31 DAYS

JUNE 30 DAYS
JULY 28 DAYS
= 130 DAYS
130 DIVIDED BY 7 = 18 weeks and 4 days or 18 4/7
EXAMPLE:

❑ LMP: APRIL 15 – 20. 2021

❑ VISIT: JULY 12, 2021
APRIL 30 – 15 = 15
APRIL 15 DAYS

MAY 31 DAYS
JUNE 30 DAYS
JULY 12 DAYS
= 88 DAYS
88 DIVIDED BY 7 = 12 weeks and 4 days or 12 4/7
Compute for the AOG
❑ LMP: JUNE 4 – 8, 2021
❑ VISIT: OCTOBER 1, 2021
JUNE 30 – 4 = 26

JUNE 26
JULY 31
AUG 31

ASSESSMENT OF FETAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

ESTIMATING FETAL GROWTH – Mc Donald’s Rule

❑ Explain the procedure

❑ Instruct the client to void
❑ Measure the fundic height (FH) in cm. Using Mc Donald’s Rule
FORMULA (Lunar Months)
❑ Multiply the fundic height by two then divide by seven

FH (in cm) X2 = gestational age in LUNAR MOS

7
What is the estimated gestational age in months if the fundic height is 31.5cm?
❑ Solution:

31.5 X2 = 63
63 divided by 7 = 9 months
❑ Compute for the AOG:
What is the estimate gestational age in months if the fundic height is 28cm?
❑ Solution:
28 X 2 = 56
56 divided by 7 = 8 months
FORMULA (weeks)
❑ Multiply the fundic height by 8 then divide by seven

FH (in cm) X8 = gestational age by weeks

HEALTH NURSING – LECTURE

What is the estimated gestational age in weeks if the fundic height is 36 cm?
❑ Solution:
36 X 8 = 288

288 divided by 7 = 41 – 42 weeks (if there are any decimal or days you extend the weeks)
❑ Compute for the AOG:
What is the estimated gestational age in weeks if the fundic height is 28cm?
❑ Solution:

28 X 8 = 224
224 divided by 7 = 32 weeks

BARTHOLOMEW’S RULE
❑ Estimate AOG by relative position of the uterus in the abdominal cavity

3rd lunar month – fundus is palpable slightly above the symphysis pubis
5th lunar month – fundus is at the level of the umbilicus
9th lunar month – fundus is below the xyphoid process
Fundus height is measured in the centimeters from the pubic symphysis to the topo most
portion of the uterus
HAASE’S RULE
❑ Determines the length of the uterus in centimeter. The length of the embryo in
centimeter can be circulated during the:
❑ First 5 months of gestation by squaring the number month of pregnancy
❑ In the 6th to the 9th month, by multiplying the number of the month of pregnancy by 5
EXAMPLR:
1. A 4-month-old fetus is approx. 16 cm long
4 X 4 = 16cm

2. An 8-month-old fetus is 40cm long

8 X 5 = 40cm
