 Motivation
Engage learners in the class by asking
them what they
already know about bar graphs, or asking
them to show you a sample of any bar graphs
they have made. It is important that you are
able to connect their prior knowledge on
making bar graphs to the present lesson
which is about making line graphs.

In presenting data, graphs and charts help


people understand the sense of data quickly.
They help in determining relationships, trends
or comparison. One of these graphs is the
LINE GRAPH. Today, you will explore
different parts of a line graph, like the x-axis,
y-axis, and the scale. You will see how line
graphs can be used to answer questions
about data. You will find out how to collect
your own data and display the information in a
line graph.

Marvie’s family is planning to visit


Bukidnon. They wanted to be there in its
coldest atmosphere. Marvie made a research
on the average monthly temperature during
vacation months, October (Sembreak),
December (Christmas break), April and May
(Summer break). The line graph above shows
the average monthly temperature at selected
months. If they decided based on the line
graph, can you tell in which month will
Marvie’s family go to Bukidnon?

Let the pupils read the problem. Use the


DRTA Approach while reading to elaborate
every part of the problem.
While reading ask the following questions:
- Where and when did Marvie’s family plan to
visit?
- How did they make sure that they will visit
Bukidnon in its coldest temperature?

The line graph as shown contains two
related data, the month which can be seen in
the horizontal axis (or x-axis) and the

corresponding temperature in a given month


which is shown in the vertical axis (or y-axis).
If we will analyze, in October, the
temperature is about 17 degrees Celsius, in
December it is at 10 degrees Celsius, April 15
degrees Celsius and May about 18 degrees
Celsius.
Based on the line graph, the month when
the temperature in Bukidnon is lowest is at 10
degrees Celsius which is in December.
Therefore, Marvie’s family should go to
Bukidnon in December.

 Process the Lesson


- Elaborate more about line graph to the class.
Data gathered and organized can be
presented using graphs. One of these is the
line graph. The line graph has a vertical line
called the y-axis which contains the first
variable in the collected data. As we go up
through the y-axis, increasing values must be
presented. It may represent almost any type of
numerical data such as pesos, scores,
number of people, temperature, grades, etc.
On the other hand, the horizontal line called
the x-axis in the line graph contains the
second variable that relates to the first
variable in the collected data. As we go to the
right in the x-axis, time periods or names of
things being compared are enumerated.
- Explain and discuss how to construct and
interpret a
line graph.
In constructing a line graph, we follow
these steps:
1. Draw the lines for the x-axis and the y-axis.
2. use the data from the table to label the
axes.

3. Plot the points that correspond to each


variable in the table.
4. Connect the points with a line segment.
5. Put a title on the graph.

- To interpret the line graph, the line that goes


up means an increase in value, while a line
that goes down from its previous point means
a decrease in value.

- Get one volunteer from your pupils and
ask his/her daily expenses. Then, organize the
data collected in a table. Use the data in the
table to construct a line graph.
