I. Rationale
There are about an estimated 14 million Indigenous Peoples in the
Philippines. The majority of indigenous peoples (61%) are found in
Mindanao, 33% are found in Luzon, and 6% are in Visayas (NCIP,
2009). During colonization, manipulation schemes and strategies were
employed by colonizers to remove Indigenous peoples from their land
and exploit their natural resources. Thousands of Indigenous families
were forcibly displaced and deprived of their livelihoods. This massive
violation of the collective rights of Indigenous peoples has yet to be
rectified, and the legacies of systemic marginalization and
discrimination are exacerbated by today’s lack of cultural sensitivity.

Despite a constitutional guarantee and the passage decades ago of a

special law for the protection of the rights of Ips in the country, the
marginalized group still complains of discrimination, stereotypes and
prejudice and this is often rooted through lack of tolerance and
understanding towards the diverse cultures of Indigenous Peoples.
ALAMINdanao a shortened word for “Alamin ang Mindanao.” It was
designed because of the urgency felt by us advocates to end Cultural
Insensitivity, to enlighten and educate other young people about
cultural differences. It is a sustainable project that aims to extend
further into the whole country.
